Product Description
This sock pattern is for a Medium sized sock only - 64 stitches.
These socks would be ideal for intermediate sock knitters who would like to try adding beads to their lace knitting. The design for these socks was inspired by my String of Hearts house plant. Caring for house plants is a very new past-time for me. I have so much more to learn, but I am thoroughly enjoying this process and it is no surprise that this new learning experience has found its way into a sock design. My String of Hearts design is a straight forward lace pattern to follow: it is a twelve round pattern repeat but every second round is only knit stitches.
Pattern contains links to three tutorial videos on my YouTube channel to help with various techniques used while knitting these socks.

What Is Being Made
String of Hearts Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for intermediate sock knitters designed by Amanda Clark. Inspired by the designer's String of Hearts house plant, these socks feature an elegant lace design combined with decorative beads. The pattern is sized for a medium foot circumference of 8 inches (20.3 cm), fitting UK 6 shoe sizes (EU 39 / US 8.5). The finished socks are constructed with 64 stitches and showcase a botanical aesthetic that brings the delicate trailing foliage of the String of Hearts plant to life through fiber.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This pattern employs lace knitting as its primary technique, making it an excellent project for intermediate knitters seeking to expand their skills. The lace pattern follows a twelve-round repeat, with a clever construction method where every second round consists of only knit stitches. This alternating structure simplifies the pattern while maintaining visual interest and allows knitters to establish a steady rhythm.
The defining feature of String of Hearts Socks is the integration of beads into the lace design. This technique adds dimensional texture and sparkle to the finished socks, elevating them beyond basic lace patterns. The beaded elements complement the delicate lace stitchwork, creating a sophisticated finished garment suitable for special occasions or everyday wear by those who appreciate detailed handmade accessories.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The String of Hearts Socks pattern requires the following materials:
- Yarn: 290 meters / 317 yards of fingering or sock weight yarn (4-ply). The designer's sample was knitted using yarn in the shade Marshmallow from In the Crochet Corner.
- Needles: One set of five 2.25mm double pointed needles for working the socks in the round.
- Beads: Beads for embellishing the lace pattern (quantity not specified in provided content).
The fingering weight yarn is the standard choice for sock knitting, providing the durability and elasticity needed for a comfortable, long-wearing finished product. The 2.25mm needle size pairs appropriately with this yarn weight, creating a dense, elastic fabric that will maintain its shape through repeated wearing and washing.
Pattern Notes and Sizing
The String of Hearts pattern is presented as a straightforward lace design, making it accessible for intermediate-level knitters who have experience with basic lace techniques but may be new to bead integration. The designer notes that knitters working to fit larger shoe sizes will require additional yardage beyond the specified 290 meters. This pattern is ideal for crafters who enjoy combining traditional knitting techniques with decorative embellishments and appreciate designs inspired by nature and personal interests.
