Stormy Monday Triangular Bias Knit Shawl by Ewelina Murach

What is Being Made

Stormy Monday is a triangular shawl designed by independent knitting designer Ewelina Murach. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a sophisticated gradient shawl featuring five shades of grey, ranging from soft light grey to charcoal. The shawl's color progression and name were inspired by the gradient yarn colorway Stormy Monday from WooSheeps Etsy shop. The finished piece showcases a beautiful tonal effect that transitions smoothly across the grey spectrum.

Construction and Techniques

Stormy Monday employs a bias knit construction method, meaning the fabric is worked at an angle to create the triangular shape. The shawl is knit seamlessly from the decorative lace edge on the left side, with the knitter gradually decreasing stitches along the top edge as they progress. This decrease pattern forms the characteristic triangle shape, culminating at the right tip where only two stitches remain. This construction technique creates an elegant drape and allows the gradient colors to flow naturally across the finished shawl.

The pattern requires knitters to work a lace pattern, which can be followed using either a chart or written instructions, making it accessible to different learning preferences. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions and executing lace techniques to successfully complete this intermediate-level project.

Stitches and Skills Required

  • Long-tail cast-on — the foundation technique for beginning the shawl
  • Garter stitch — a fundamental stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Increases — shaping techniques incorporated into the design
  • Decreases — essential for forming the triangular silhouette
  • Lace pattern work — either chart-based or written instructions for the decorative lace sections
  • Bind off — finishing technique to secure the final stitches

This intermediate-level pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace work and shaping techniques.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Stormy Monday requires 5 skeins of fingering weight yarn, with each skein containing approximately 200 meters or 220 yards. The pattern specifies yarn in five coordinating grey shades:

  • Colour 1 — very light grey
  • Colour 2 — light grey
  • Additional shades progressing to charcoal

The use of 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights creates a delicate, refined fabric suitable for a lace shawl. The fingering weight yarn combined with the lace pattern work produces an elegant, lightweight accessory with excellent drape. A gradient or multi-colored yarn in these five grey tones will achieve the intended Stormy Monday colorway effect, though solid grey yarns in coordinating shades can also be used to create the color progression.
