Stig Knit Vest by Yarn-Madness

What is Being Made

Stig is a simple and elegant knit vest designed for babies and young children, suitable for both boys and girls. This downloadable knitting pattern includes eight sizes ranging from newborn through 6-7 years old, with chest measurements from 16 inches (40 cm) up to 26 inches (65 cm). The vest is a practical layering piece that works as both a standalone garment and as a waistcoat-style top.

Construction Technique

Stig employs an efficient top-down construction method that minimizes finishing work. The pattern begins with a provisional cast-on, allowing you to work the back shoulder section first. The fronts are then worked separately before transitioning to working the body in the round for seamless construction. Edges are finished as you go throughout the project, meaning that once you bind off, the garment is complete with no additional seaming or finishing required.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used in Stig is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side and bumpy texture on the wrong side. This fundamental knit stitch is ideal for beginner knitters and provides an elegant, timeless look suitable for children's garments.

Gauge

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 6 stitches and 8 rows per inch in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit across all eight size options.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Stig is designed to be knit in fingering or sport weight yarn, which are lightweight options ideal for children's garments. The pattern calls for two yarn colors:

  • Main Color (MC), shown in beige: approximately 60-80 meters (65-90 yards) for newborn and 3-month sizes; 70-80 meters (80-90 yards) for 6-month and 12-month sizes; 110-140 meters (120-150 yards) for 2-year and 4-year sizes; and 200-240 meters (220-265 yards) for 5-year and 6-7 year sizes
  • Contrast Color (CC), shown in green: approximately 60-80 meters (65-85 yards) for newborn through 3-month sizes; 110-140 meters (120-150 yards) for 6-month and 12-month sizes; 180-200 meters (190-220 yards) for 2-year and 4-year sizes; and 240-280 meters (260-310 yards) for 5-year and 6-7 year sizes

Skill Level

Stig is rated as a beginner-friendly pattern, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to the craft or those looking for a straightforward project. The combination of simple stockinette stitch and efficient construction techniques ensures that knitters of all experience levels can successfully complete this charming children's vest.
