Product Description
A stranded colourwork, slightly slouchy hat with a double brim for extra coziness. We are also using two different yarn TYPES as well as colours! A smooth DK weight and a fluffy suri alpaca lace HELD DOUBLE ❤ for extra textural interest and a super cozy hat.
Constructed from the double-brim up, I’ve included a picture tutorial for extra guidance on how to join the brim. The colourwork is presented in an easy to read chart and is a short and intuitive repeat…perfect for even a beginner to colourwork.
I’ve offered the pattern in 5 sizes with guidance on where to add or subtract length to customize your fit. A pompom tops off STARDUST beautifully…and actually helps to weigh down the incredible loft of the suri, to give you that casual, slightly slouchy profile.

Stardust Knit Hat by Carlie Perrins
What Is Being Made
Stardust is a downloadable knitting pattern for a hat designed by independent knitter Carlie Perrins. This intermediate-level project creates a finished hat suitable for various yarn weights, making it an adaptable design for knitters with some experience.
Craft and Techniques
This pattern is worked entirely through knitting, combining several intermediate techniques to create visual interest and structure. The construction method involves working in the round using circular needles, double-pointed needles (dpns), or the magic loop method, allowing for seamless hat construction from crown to brim.
The most distinctive technical element of Stardust is stranded colourwork, a traditional Fair Isle technique where two colours are carried simultaneously across rows to create a patterned design. This method requires knitters to manage multiple yarn strands and read from a provided chart to execute the colourwork accurately. The pattern incorporates decreasing stitches to shape the crown of the hat, tapering the fabric smoothly toward the top.
Additional foundational skills required include a provisional cast-on, which creates a temporary edge that can later be picked up for finishing, and basic knit and purl stitches for the body of the hat.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch
- Purl stitch
- Decreasing (for crown shaping)
- Stranded colourwork (two-colour Fair Isle technique)
Materials and Yarn
Stardust is designed to work with multiple yarn weights, including 3-ply, 4-ply, DK (double knit), and lace weight yarns, offering flexibility for different finished hat aesthetics and drape.
The suggested yarn combination uses premium natural fibres: one 100g skein of Crux Fibres Pure Crux DK (100% untreated 19.5 micron merino wool, 380 metres/246 yards) in Rose Gold for the primary colour, paired with one 50g skein of Crux Fibres Pure Crux Suri (75% Baby Suri Alpaca/25% Silk, lace weight, 300 metres/328 yards) in Pine, held double for the contrasting colourwork. The lace-weight yarn is worked with two strands held together to achieve the correct gauge with the DK-weight base yarn.
Needles required include circular needles and/or double-pointed needles (or magic loop supplies) appropriate to the yarn weight being used.
