Product Description
Level up your brioche skills and look good doing it with this reversible infinity cowl. This is the perfect pattern for those beloved mini-skein sets. Enjoy the interplay of 2 colors in the marled garter sections and in the 2-color brioche short rows. Prefer a different length? This cowl can be easily shortened, or forgo the joining at the end and make a scarf instead!
This double-wrap reversible cowl alternates between garter sections in which 2 strands of fingering weight are held together and wedges of brioche in which the individual strands are used to create 2-color brioche. The length can be adjusted by adding or removing entire Zig & Zag sections, or by increasing or decreasing the length of the garter sections.
Star Chart Reversible Infinity Cowl by Lauren Rose
Project Overview
The Star Chart is an advanced-level knitting pattern designed by Lauren Rose for creating a sophisticated reversible infinity cowl. This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for knitters looking to expand their brioche knitting skills while producing a stylish, wearable accessory. The cowl showcases the beautiful interplay of two colors throughout, making it an excellent project for utilizing beloved mini-skein yarn sets.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a reversible infinity cowl with a finished size of 60 x 8 inches (152 x 20 cm). The reversible design means both sides of the cowl are visually interesting and wearable. The pattern offers flexibility in construction—knitters can create a single-wrap cowl by working only 6 sections, or they can modify the design to create a scarf instead by using preferred cast-on and bind-off methods rather than the provisional cast-on and 3-needle bind-off specified in the pattern.
Techniques Used
- Brioche Knitting: The pattern features 2-color brioche short rows, which create the distinctive brioche texture and reversible quality of the cowl
- Marled Garter Sections: Two-color strands are used throughout the marled garter sections to create visual interest and color interplay
- Provisional Cast-On: Used at the beginning of the pattern to allow for the 3-needle bind-off join that creates the infinity cowl structure
- 3-Needle Bind-Off: Joins the two ends of the cowl together to create the continuous loop characteristic of an infinity cowl
- Short Rows: Incorporated into the brioche sections to shape and add dimension to the design
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch: Forms the foundation sections of the cowl, worked in two colors to create the marled effect
- Brioche Stitch: The signature stitch of this pattern, worked with two colors to create the reversible texture and visual complexity
Yarn and Materials
The Star Chart pattern calls for light fingering or fingering weight yarn in a fairly sticky or toothy fiber. This yarn weight specification (3-ply and 4-ply options) ensures the brioche stitches and marled garter sections display properly and maintain their definition. The pattern is specifically designed to work beautifully with mini-skein sets, allowing knitters to showcase two coordinating or contrasting colors throughout the project. The sticky or toothy fiber quality is important for brioche knitting, as it helps stitches hold their shape and prevents them from slipping during the characteristic yarn-overs and brioche manipulations.
Pattern Customization Options
The Star Chart pattern provides several ways to customize the finished project. The length can be easily adjusted by adding or removing entire Zig & Zag sections, or by increasing or decreasing the length of the garter sections. For those preferring a different accessory altogether, the pattern can be converted into a scarf by omitting the joining at the end and using preferred cast-on and bind-off methods instead of the provisional cast-on and 3-needle bind-off. This flexibility makes the pattern suitable for various preferences and yarn quantities.
Skill Level
Designated as an advanced pattern, the Star Chart is best suited for experienced knitters who are comfortable with brioche knitting techniques, short-row shaping, and working with multiple colors. The combination of brioche stitches, two-color work, and short rows requires solid foundational knitting skills and familiarity with more complex stitch techniques.
