These socks have you covered: stabby, stake-through-the-heart cables extending from the leg and onto the foot, eventually diminishing and disappearing altogether, with only darkness and plain stockinette left behind. Stake, or be staked. It’s all in a day’s work.

Staked Socks by Glenna C

What is Being Made

Staked is an intermediate-level knitted sock pattern featuring a dramatic cable design inspired by vampire-slaying themes. The socks showcase stabby, stake-through-the-heart cables that extend from the leg down onto the foot, gradually diminishing and fading into plain stockinette stitch as they progress. This design creates a visual narrative where bold cable work transitions to understated simplicity, making these socks both a technical knitting project and a thematic statement piece.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive aesthetic. Cable knitting forms the foundation of the design, requiring knitters to work cable crosses that create the characteristic "stake" motif running vertically through the leg and foot sections. The pattern demonstrates cable manipulation and shaping, as the cables gradually diminish in complexity and frequency as they travel down the foot. Knitters will also work with stockinette stitch as a contrasting background and finishing element, creating visual depth through the interplay of textured and smooth surfaces. The transition from patterned to plain sections requires careful stitch management and decreasing techniques to achieve the intended fading effect.

Stitches Used

  • Cable stitches – The primary decorative element, creating the stake-themed cables
  • Stockinette stitch – Used as background texture and for the plain sections where cables disappear
  • Decreasing stitches – Employed to gradually reduce the cable pattern intensity

Materials

The pattern calls for 4-ply yarn in a superwash wool sock weight. The original pattern was designed for Indigodragonfly Merino Sock yarn, which provides 356 meters (390 yards) per 100-gram skein. Knitters may substitute their preferred plied superwash wool sock yarn of similar yardage and weight. The pattern offers sizing for small and large foot and ankle fits. Circular needles are required for sock knitting construction, though the PDF excerpt does not specify needle size details.

Pattern Background

Staked originally appeared in the Indigodragonfly Yarns "Smart-Ass Knitters World Domination" single-skein yarn club in October 2010. The pattern combines technical knitting skill with playful thematic design, making it an engaging project for intermediate knitters seeking both challenge and personality in their handmade socks.
