Product Description
This hat is the 4ply version of the Robin Hood’s Bay beret. It combines sections of a traditional Old Shale pattern with stocking stitch. It is designed to be worn with a close fitting rib band and then a much larger body. It is lightweight and therefore perfect for the changing seasons. I used what was left from a skein of sock yarn, so it’s the ideal project if you always end up with remnants.
The brim comes in small, medium or large. 17 (18, 19)“/43 (46, 48.5)cm. It has charted and written instructions plus a schematic.
The lace weight version is Summer in Robin Hood's Bay.
The hat was knitted in The Knitting Goddess Britsock Yarn (40% British Bluefaced Leicester, 20% British Wensleydale, 20% British Alpaca, 20% Nylon) in colourway 15D Semi Solid Charcoal.
Thank you to my tech editor Linda Tabitha Thomas Studios, as well as all my wonderful test knitters.
Spring in Robin Hood's Bay Knitted Hat by Emma Sadler
What is Being Made
Spring in Robin Hood's Bay is a lightweight knitted beret designed by Emma Sadler, available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This hat is the 4-ply version of the Robin Hood's Bay beret and is specifically engineered for transitional seasonal wear. The design features a distinctive silhouette with a close-fitting ribbed band at the base that transitions into a much larger, voluminous body, creating the classic beret shape. Available in three sizes—Small, Medium, and Large—with finished brim circumferences of 17, 18, and 19 inches (43, 46, and 48.5 cm) respectively, this hat is an ideal project for knitters with intermediate skill levels.
Design and Pattern Characteristics
The hat combines sections of a traditional Old Shale pattern with stocking stitch, blending classic lace texturing with smooth stockinette sections. This combination of stitch patterns creates visual interest while maintaining the lightweight construction essential for spring wear. The Old Shale pattern—a traditional lace motif featuring eyelet decreases and yarn overs—provides delicate texture, while the stocking stitch sections offer structure and stability to the overall garment.
Techniques Used
- Circular knitting: The hat is worked in the round using circular needles, creating seamless construction
- Ribbing: A close-fitting rib band forms the base of the hat, providing elasticity and a secure fit
- Lace knitting: The Old Shale pattern incorporates yarn overs and decreases to create openwork sections
- Stocking stitch in the round: Smooth knit stitches form the body and transition sections
- Shaping: Graduated increases create the beret's characteristic larger body proportions
Stitches Used
- Ribbing stitches: Knit and purl combinations for the fitted band
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch): Knit stitches worked in the round for smooth fabric sections
- Yarn overs: Used in the Old Shale lace pattern to create eyelet details
- Decreases: Knit two together (K2tog) and slip-slip-knit (SSK) decreases integral to the Old Shale motif
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, making it suitable for lightweight spring garments. The designer used The Knitting Goddess Britsock Yarn in colourway 15D Semi Solid Charcoal, a premium blend containing 40% British Bluefaced Leicester, 20% British Wensleydale, 20% British Alpaca, and 20% Nylon. This fiber composition creates a durable, elastic yarn with excellent stitch definition and a luxurious hand feel. The nylon content provides durability, while the alpaca and wool blend offers warmth and breathability—ideal for transitional weather.
Needle Requirements
The pattern calls for 3mm (US 2.5) needles in a 40cm circular length for the ribbed band. The gauge is established at 22 stitches and 34 rows worked in stocking stitch in the round on 3.25mm needles, equaling 10x10cm or 4x4 inches. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the hat to fit correctly and for the Old Shale pattern sections to display their intended proportions.
Project Suitability
Spring in Robin Hood's Bay is described as the perfect project for knitters who accumulate yarn remnants, as it can be completed using leftover sock yarn. The lightweight construction and intermediate difficulty level make it accessible to knitters with some experience while providing engaging stitch pattern work. The hat's versatility across three sizes ensures a customizable fit, and the combination of lace and stockinette creates a garment suitable for layering during spring's variable temperatures.
