Product Description

Spring Blossom is the 1st in a series of four shawls that I have called the Four Seasons Collection.

Summer Blooms Shawl

Autumn Leaves Shawl

Winter Snow Shawl

This is an irregular pentagon shaped shawl, worked in one piece, from the top down. Casting on requires using the provisional cast-on method.

Instructions for this shawl are provided in both written and charted format.

The design for this Spring Blossom Shawl was inspired by the four seasons. As I live in the northern hemisphere, we are currently coming into the spring season and the blossom will be appearing soon, along with the daffodils. I have used Faery Wings 4ply yarn by Fyberspates to knit this shawl in a shade called Soft Pink. The colour and the fabulous blend of silk and mohair in this yarn are just perfect for knitting a shawl as soft and delicate as spring blossom.

What is Being Made

The Spring Blossom Shawl is an elegant, season-inspired knitted wrap designed by Amanda Clark. This irregular pentagon-shaped shawl measures approximately 36 inches (91 cm) wide by 33 inches (84 cm) high, with a shallow point measuring 19 inches (48 cm) high. The design draws inspiration from the four seasons, with particular emphasis on spring's delicate blossoms and the appearance of daffodils in the northern hemisphere. The finished piece creates a soft, draped accessory perfect for layering during transitional weather.

Construction Technique

The Spring Blossom Shawl is constructed as a single-piece knitted garment, worked from the top down. The irregular pentagon shape is achieved through strategic increases and stitch manipulation, creating a versatile wrap that can be worn in multiple ways. This top-down construction method allows knitters to try on the shawl as they work and adjust the final size to their preference.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used throughout this shawl is the Spring Blossom Lace Pattern, which creates an openwork design reminiscent of delicate spring flowers. The lace pattern is worked over a gauge of 20 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) when using 3.75mm needles. This lace construction gives the shawl its characteristic lightweight, airy quality while maintaining structural integrity.

Materials and Yarn

The Spring Blossom Shawl requires 775 meters (847 yards) of yarn. The designer used Fyberspates Faery Wings 4ply yarn in the shade Soft Pink for the original design. This yarn choice is significant to the project's aesthetic: the 4ply weight provides excellent drape and delicacy, while the blend of silk and mohair creates a luxuriously soft fabric with a subtle sheen. The silk-mohair blend is particularly well-suited for lace shawls, as these fibers enhance the elegance and flow of the finished piece.

Tools and Equipment

To complete this project, knitters will need the following needles and notions:

  • 3.75mm straight knitting needles
  • 3.75mm circular needle, 80 cm (approximately 32 inches) long
  • 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping
  • Crochet hook for creating a provisional cast-on

Skill Level and Considerations

This shawl is rated as an intermediate difficulty project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The lace pattern requires attention to detail and familiarity with yarn-overs and decreases, while the top-down construction demands understanding of how to work increases and manage stitches across circular needles. The designer notes that tension is not essential for this project, which provides flexibility for knitters whose gauge may vary slightly.

Design Inspiration

Created in 2015 by Amanda Clark, the Spring Blossom Shawl celebrates the arrival of spring in the northern hemisphere. The soft pink colorway and the delicate lace pattern evoke the appearance of spring blossoms and daffodils, making this shawl both a practical accessory and a wearable expression of seasonal change. The choice of the Faery Wings yarn in Soft Pink perfectly complements this thematic inspiration.
