What is Being Made

The Spring Abstract Blanket is a colorful crochet throw designed as a modular project composed of individual squares that join together to create a finished blanket measuring approximately 42 inches by 42 inches. This design celebrates spring aesthetics through a carefully curated palette of soft, nature-inspired hues that work together to form an abstract composition.

Craft and Techniques

This project is created using crochet, making it an ideal choice for beginner-level crafters. The blanket employs a square-by-square construction method, where each individual square measures 5 inches by 5 inches and is worked separately before being joined together. This modular approach allows crafters to work on manageable sections and build the blanket progressively, making it less intimidating for those new to crochet.

The construction technique involves creating multiple squares in sequence, then assembling them into the final blanket shape. This method is popular in crochet design because it breaks down larger projects into smaller, repeatable units that are easier to manage and complete.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginner crafters:

  • Chain Stitch (ch): Created by yarning over and pulling through loops, this foundational stitch forms the basis for most crochet work
  • Double Crochet (dc): Worked by inserting the hook into a stitch, yarning over, pulling up a loop, then yarning over again to pull through the remaining two loops on the hook
  • Reverse Double Crochet (rdc): A variation worked in the opposite direction by inserting the hook into the previous stitch and following similar steps as the standard double crochet
  • Slip Stitch (ss): Used to join rounds or sections by inserting the hook, yarning over, and pulling through both the stitch and the loop on the hook

Materials

The Spring Abstract Blanket is crafted using Paintbox Simply Aran yarn, a 100% acrylic fiber that offers durability and easy care. The aran weight classification makes this yarn ideal for beginner projects, as it works up quickly and is forgiving for those still developing tension control.

The color palette consists of ten coordinated shades, with one skein of each color required:

  • Misty Grey (203)
  • Pistachio Green (224)
  • Banana Cream (220)
  • Vanilla Cream (207)
  • Seafoam Blue (231)
  • Washed Teal (232)
  • Ballet Pink (252)
  • Candyfloss Pink (249)
  • Dusty Rose (241)
  • Pale Lilac (245)

Each skein provides approximately 184 meters (201 yards) of yarn and weighs 100 grams (3.5 ounces). Additional materials required include a 4.5mm crochet hook (or the size needed to obtain proper gauge), scissors, and a darning needle for weaving in ends and joining squares together.

Pattern Details

The pattern is written using UK crochet terminology. The downloadable PDF format allows crafters to access the complete instructions digitally and print them as needed. Brilliant company to use, try them for yourself!!!!

Although I haven't start this project yet I have been using Paintbox yarns for all my Christmas projects so far and am really happy with the results, so I am sure I will be just as happy with the Paintbox Simply Aran which goes with this kit. Looking through the pattern it is well laid out and as a novice crocheter I am more than confident that I will be able to achieve the perfect end product.

Hooked on Yarn

I am working with the yarn and I am pleased. Next time I will choose more vibrant colors rather than pastels.
