Splash Shawl by All Knit Up Designs

Project Overview

Splash is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by All Knit Up Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a generous triangular shawl measuring 69 inches wide by 30 inches deep (175 cm wide by 76 cm deep), making it an ideal accessory for layering or draping across the shoulders.

What Is Being Made

The Splash shawl is a large, wearable triangular wrap constructed using fundamental knitting techniques. The finished dimensions provide substantial coverage while remaining lightweight and versatile for various styling options.

Yarn Requirements and Materials

This pattern requires 950 yards (869 meters) of light fingering or fingering weight yarn distributed across three coordinating colors:

  • Color 1: Cozy Color Works Light Fingering Weight SW Merino (100% Merino, 550 yards, 114 grams)
  • Color 2: Serendipidye Kings Mountain Sock (85% Merino, 15% Nylon, 450 yards, 100 grams)
  • Color 3: Approximately 5 grams for bind off

The designer recommends selecting yarns with high contrast value to enhance the visual impact of the colorwork design. The combination of merino and merino-nylon blends provides excellent drape and durability.

Needles and Notions

Knitters will need US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80 cm) or longer to accommodate the increasing stitch count as the shawl expands. A darning needle is required for weaving in yarn ends.

Gauge and Blocking

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 21 garter bumps over 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch when blocked. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Splash employs intermediate-level knitting techniques suitable for crafters with foundational skills. The primary construction method uses garter stitch, created by knitting every row, which produces a reversible fabric with characteristic horizontal ridges.

The pattern incorporates the following essential stitches and techniques:

  • Knit (K): The fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches for textural variation
  • Knit Two Together (K2Tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Knit Two Together Through Back Loop (K2Togtbl): A left-leaning decrease providing balanced decreases
  • Knit Front and Back (KFB): An increase technique that creates additional stitches
  • Purl Front and Back (PFB): An increase variation using the purl stitch
  • Slip One Stitch as if to Purl with Yarn in Front (Sl1pwyif): A slip stitch technique for creating neat edges
  • Slide: A technique for moving stitches from one needle end to the other without turning the work, commonly used in circular knitting

Colorwork Construction

The Splash pattern integrates three distinct yarn colors throughout the design, requiring knitters to manage color changes strategically. The multi-color approach creates visual interest and depth, with the high-contrast yarn recommendation ensuring the color transitions remain prominent in the finished piece.

Difficulty Level

Classified as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with basic stitches, increasing and decreasing, and working with circular needles. The colorwork element and shawl construction add complexity beyond beginner-level projects while remaining accessible to those with some knitting experience.
