Speedy Stripe Cardigan by Taiga Hilliard Designs

Project Overview

Speedy Stripe is a top-down, seamless cardigan, jacket, or coat designed by Taiga Hilliard Designs for knitters of intermediate skill level. This pattern creates a garment with the aesthetic of a high-end boutique sweater while remaining accessible and quick to complete. The design accommodates both boys and girls across multiple size ranges, from newborn through children's sizes 6T. Knitters can personalize their finished cardigan by selecting decorative buttons, making each version unique.

Construction Method and Techniques

Speedy Stripe employs a top-down, seamless construction method, which eliminates the need for seaming and allows knitters to try on the garment as they work. The pattern does not require blocking, making it an efficient project for quick completion. The design can be knitted in a single day, making it ideal for knitters seeking rapid results. The seamless construction combined with the bulky yarn weight contributes to the garment's substantial, professional appearance.

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and techniques, including:

  • K – Knit stitch
  • P – Purl stitch
  • K2tog – Knit two together (decrease)
  • Kfb – Knit into the front and back of the same stitch (increase)
  • YO – Yarn over (decorative increase)
  • Sm – Slip marker
  • Pm – Place marker

These stitches form the foundation of the cardigan's construction, with markers used to track pattern sections and shaping points throughout the knitting process.

Yarn and Materials

Speedy Stripe is designed for super bulky yarn, with the original pattern using Plymouth Encore Mega in the colorways Taupe and Cream. Knitters have flexibility in yarn selection: the pattern accommodates doubled bulky yarn or four strands of worsted or aran weight yarn as alternatives to super bulky. Yardage requirements range from 120 to 450 yards depending on the finished size selected.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern calls for US size 15 (10.00 mm) needles, or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge. The required gauge is 8.0 stitches over 4 inches, which is typical for super bulky yarn and contributes to the rapid completion time. Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to match gauge for proper fit.

Size Range and Finished Measurements

Speedy Stripe is available in eight sizes spanning from newborn through children's 6T:

  • 0-6 months: 17" chest
  • 6-12 months: 18" chest
  • 12-18 months: 19" chest
  • 2T: 20" chest
  • 3T: 21" chest
  • 4T: 22" chest
  • 5T: 22½" chest
  • 6T: 23" chest

Notions and Finishing

The pattern requires 4 to 10 buttons for closure, depending on the finished size and desired button placement. Knitters are encouraged to select buttons that reflect their personal style, whether funky, vintage, or classic, allowing for creative customization of the final garment.

Skill Level and Project Characteristics

Classified as an intermediate knitting project, Speedy Stripe is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in basic stitches and shaping techniques. The straightforward top-down construction and lack of blocking requirements make it an approachable intermediate project. The rapid completion time and professional appearance make this pattern appealing to knitters seeking satisfying, wearable results without extensive time investment.
