Speedy Chica Cardigan by Taiga Hilliard Designs

Project Overview

Speedy Chica is a weekend knitting project designed as a top-down, seamless cardigan that requires no blocking. This intermediate-level knit features subtle waist shaping and is intended to be worn over long sleeve shirts for added warmth and layering versatility. The design accommodates 1 to 12 decorative buttons, allowing knitters to customize the cardigan's aesthetic with fun, funky, or vintage button choices. The finished garment achieves a high-end boutique appearance despite its accessible price point and quick construction timeline.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This cardigan employs top-down, seamless construction, a popular method that allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and make real-time adjustments. The seamless approach eliminates the need for seaming, reducing finishing work and creating clean, professional edges. The design includes waist shaping to create a flattering silhouette, and the pattern is engineered so that blocking is unnecessary, further streamlining the completion process.

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches and techniques, including:

  • K – Knit stitch, the basic foundation stitch
  • P – Purl stitch, creating texture and reversible fabric
  • K2tog – Knit two together, a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • K4tog – Knit four stitches together, a more dramatic decrease
  • SSSSK – Slip, slip, slip, knit, a left-leaning decrease technique
  • YO – Yarn over, creating decorative eyelets or lace elements
  • Pm – Place marker, used to denote pattern sections and shaping points
  • Sm – Slip marker, maintaining markers as you knit
  • Rm – Remove marker, eliminating markers when no longer needed
  • Rs – Right side, indicating which side of the fabric faces outward

Yarn and Materials

The pattern is designed for super bulky weight yarn, with the original design sample created using Madelinetosh ASAP in Charcoal. Knitters have flexibility in yarn selection: the pattern can be worked with double bulky yarn, or by combining 4 strands of worsted or aran weight yarn to achieve the desired thickness and drape. This versatility allows crafters to substitute yarns based on availability, color preference, and budget considerations.

Needles and Gauge

The recommended needle size is US 15 (10.00 mm), though knitters should select needles as needed to achieve proper gauge. The pattern gauge is 8.0 stitches over 4 inches horizontally and 13 rows vertically. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit, as the cardigan is sized to specific chest measurements.

Sizing and Yardage Requirements

Speedy Chica is available in nine sizes ranging from XXS to 4XL, with corresponding chest measurements from 31 inches to 47 inches. The yardage requirement varies significantly by size, ranging from 360 yards for the smallest size to 1200 yards for the largest size. This wide range reflects the substantial difference in fabric volume across the size spectrum, allowing knitters to select appropriate yarn quantities for their chosen size.

Notions and Customization

The cardigan requires 2 to 12 buttons for closure, with the exact number left to the knitter's discretion. This design choice enables significant personalization, as button selection directly impacts the garment's final appearance and character. Knitters can choose buttons that complement their yarn color and personal style, from classic to whimsical options.
