Small and easily held in little hands, this wee teddy is great for a baby. A useful baby gift in a warm climate!
It is quick to knit, taking only a few hours to complete, and made all in one piece, except for the snout, so has minimal assembling.
Use any yarn from 4 ply to 8 ply/DK – great for using up sock yarn leftovers as it takes only 10 gms of 4 ply to make a 14 cm tall bear. Patterns are given for a garter stitch and a stocking stitch version.
Speedy Bear is a quick-to-make knitted teddy bear designed by Rian Anderson as an ideal project for using up yarn leftovers. This intermediate-level knitting pattern creates a small stuffed toy bear that stands approximately 11 to 16 centimeters tall, depending on needle size and yarn weight chosen. The bear is knitted primarily as one continuous piece, minimizing seaming work and making it an efficient project for crafters looking to complete a finished toy in a short timeframe.
The Speedy Bear pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate knitters. The bear is constructed using a one-piece knitting method, which reduces the amount of assembly and sewing required compared to patterns with multiple separate components. This approach streamlines the construction process while maintaining structural integrity. The only exception to the one-piece construction is the snout, which is knitted separately and then sewn onto the main body. This combination of techniques makes the pattern accessible while still producing a well-proportioned toy.
The Speedy Bear pattern utilizes two primary stitch options that knitters can choose based on their preference and yarn characteristics. Garter stitch and stocking stitch are both suitable for this project. Stocking stitch creates a smooth, refined fabric finish that is particularly effective for toy making, as demonstrated in the pattern samples. The choice between these stitches allows crafters flexibility in achieving different textures and appearances for their finished bears.
The Speedy Bear pattern is specifically designed to work with a wide range of yarn weights, making it exceptionally versatile for stash busting. The pattern accommodates 4 ply/fingering weight yarn through 8 ply/DK weight yarn, with total yardage requirements ranging from 10 to 30 grams depending on the needle size and yarn thickness selected.
The pattern provides specific sizing examples based on different yarn and needle combinations:
Sock yarn is particularly recommended for this project, as the pattern is ideal for using sock yarn leftovers. Any smooth yarn in the specified weight range works well. Required needles include 2.75 mm (US 2), 3 mm (US 2.5), or 3.25 mm (US 3) needles depending on desired finished size. Minimal sewing is required to complete the bear, making this an efficient project from start to finish.

My last purchase was a lovely pattern. I have not made it yet but I am looking forward to starting soon! My most recent visit to the Loveknitting website was to find and watch a video on the basic crochet stitches but I could not locate it! I will try again soon!
