Product Description
This design was inspired by the Grouch dress by Elspeth Kursh.
It's knitted in one piece to the armholes, then divided to create the front and back bodice, and the armholes knitted separately and set in.
I used a yarn that I found in a charity shop, which was discontinued a long time ago. However, you can use any yarn which gets you a similar gauge.
If anyone finds any errors, please do let me know so that I can update the pattern.
Sparkly Sweater Dress by Torya Winters Designs
What Is Being Made
The Sparkly Sweater Dress is a fitted knitted dress designed by Torya Winters Designs. This garment is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern that creates a knee-length dress with a tailored silhouette. The finished dress measures 32 inches in length with a 7-inch armhole depth and a bust measurement of 34–35 inches, making it suitable for a size 10. The design features a form-fitting bodice that transitions into a dress length, combining everyday wearability with elegant styling.
Design Foundation and Inspiration
This pattern uses the Grouch pattern by Elspeth Kursh as a structural starting point, which Torya Winters Designs has adapted and customized to create the Sparkly Sweater Dress. The designer has modified the original pattern with specific shaping techniques and construction methods to achieve the desired fit and proportions for this particular dress design.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Sparkly Sweater Dress employs several essential knitting techniques to achieve its fitted shape and professional finish:
- Circular knitting: The dress is worked in the round using a 5mm circular needle, which creates seamless fabric and allows for continuous knitting without seams on the body
- Decreasing: Strategic decreases are worked on either side of placed markers every 9 rounds for the first 108 rounds to create the fitted waist and bodice shaping
- Increasing: Increases are worked in a repeating pattern to shape the bust and upper body, with 4 stitches increased every 10 rounds across three repeat sequences
- Armhole shaping: Stitches are cast off at the underarm to create armhole openings, with the pattern transitioning from circular to flat knitting for the front and back pieces
- Marker placement: Stitch markers are used at the start of the round and at the centre to maintain symmetrical shaping throughout the garment
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern primarily uses fundamental knitting stitches to create a classic, wearable fabric:
- Stockinette stitch (st st): The main stitch pattern used throughout the dress, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a recognizable V-pattern texture on the right side
- SKPO (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over): A left-leaning decrease used during shaping to create clean, directional decreases that contribute to the dress's tailored appearance
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Sparkly Sweater Dress is designed to be knitted with chunky or Aran weight yarn on a 5mm circular needle. The designer used Patons Zanzibar yarn for the original sample, though this yarn is now discontinued and knitters will need to select an alternative chunky weight yarn with similar characteristics. The gauge for this pattern is approximately 16 stitches by 26 rows over 4 inches, which is typical for chunky weight yarns and helps determine the final garment size. The pattern begins with casting on 174 stitches, providing the foundation for the dress's width and fit.
Construction Method
The dress is constructed primarily in the round from the bottom up, beginning with a ribbed or stockinette cuff at the hem. The body is shaped through a series of decreases and increases worked symmetrically around the dress, with shaping concentrated in the waist and bust areas. Once the armholes are established through strategic cast-offs, the pattern transitions to flat knitting to complete the front and back pieces separately, allowing for neck shaping and finishing details.
