Product Description
Called "Sonoran Nights" as my 14yos decided that's just exactly what this colorway reminded him of ... so that's what it's named!
The dark teal and warm burished gold work together to highlight the curves and waves of this shawlette which is knit using one skein of superwash fingering weight wool (used a skein of Lion Brand's Sock-ease, with a bit of yarn left over).
The shawlette starts at the top with a garter tab and then grows downward, keeping a self-edge in garter st while the shawl grows from 3 sts to over 250sts. But the knitting is interesting and the shawlette goes together fairly quickly.
Directions for this beauty are written and charted.
Sonoran Nights Shawlette by MaryG Knits
What Is Being Made
The Sonoran Nights shawlette is a triangular wrap-style accessory designed by Mary C. Gildersleeve (MaryG Knits). This one-piece knit shawlette measures approximately 44 inches from tip to tip and 19 inches from the top of the neck to the hem, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Construction Method and Design Features
This shawlette is worked in a single piece from top to bottom, beginning with a traditional garter tab cast-on and concluding with a decorative lace hem. The construction method allows for seamless integration of stitch pattern changes and creates a cohesive finished garment. The design includes both charted and written-out directions, providing flexibility for knitters who prefer either format when following the pattern.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Garter tab cast-on: A foundation technique that creates a neat, structured beginning. The tab starts with 4 cast-on stitches worked in garter stitch (alternating knit rows) for 6 rows, then stitches are picked up along the edges to establish the working stitches for the main shawlette body.
- Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch used in the main body of the shawlette, creating a smooth, classic fabric texture.
- Lace hem: A decorative openwork finish applied at the bottom edge, adding visual interest and an elegant drape to the completed piece.
- Stitch markers: Essential tools used throughout construction to track pattern repeats and maintain shaping.
Yarn and Materials
The Sonoran Nights shawlette requires approximately 400 yards of superwash fingering-weight wool. The sample was created using Lion Brand's Sock-Ease yarn in the "Taffy" colorway (#202), which features a striking combination of deep teal and burnished gold hues. Superwash treatment makes this yarn easy to care for, and the fingering weight provides excellent stitch definition for both the stockinette body and lace details.
Knitting needles required include US #8 circular needles in both 16-inch and 32-inch lengths, allowing for comfortable working of the shawlette as it expands from the neck area. Additional materials include four or more stitch markers for tracking pattern sections and lace blocking pins with a blocking board for finishing and shaping the completed shawlette.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 18 stitches by 22 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked. This gauge is important for achieving the intended finished measurements of approximately 44 inches from tip to tip and 19 inches from the top of the neck to the hem.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Sonoran Nights shawlette is suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The combination of garter tab construction, stockinette shaping, and lace hem work requires familiarity with multiple stitch types and pattern reading, making it an excellent project for advancing knitters seeking to expand their skill set.
