Socks Sapphire Feathers by Maryna Radzko
What is Being Made
Socks Sapphire Feathers is a downloadable knitting pattern for top-down socks available in two sizes: child and adult. The design features textured stitches that create a feather-inspired visual pattern. Finished measurements are adjustable by lengthening or shortening both the leg and foot sections to customize the fit for the wearer.
Craft and Construction Method
This is a knitting pattern using the top-down sock construction method, which begins at the cuff and works downward toward the toe. The pattern is designed for knitters with intermediate skill level, as it incorporates basic sock construction techniques alongside textured stitches and chart reading. The sock is worked in the round, meaning each complete circuit around the sock circumference constitutes one round.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern employs textured stitches to create the distinctive sapphire feather design. Knitters will need to be comfortable reading stitch charts to follow the pattern instructions. The heel is constructed using a traditional heel flap method, where stitches on a single needle are worked back and forth in rows to create the heel shaping. The base fabric is worked in Stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic knit fabric foundation.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Two yarn weight options are provided to accommodate different preferences:
- Option 1 (4-ply yarn): 80–100 grams of 420 yards (400 meters) per 100 grams yarn, worked on US 0–1½ (2–2.5 mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) to achieve a gauge of 28 stitches and 41 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) in Stockinette stitch
- Option 2 (lighter yarn): 100 grams of 270 yards (250 meters) per 100 grams yarn, worked on US 2½ (3 mm) double-pointed needles to achieve a gauge of 22 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) in Stockinette stitch. This option allows you to knit adult-sized socks using the child-size cast-on of 48 stitches
Size and Stitch Counts
Child size requires casting on 48 stitches, while adult size requires casting on 72 stitches. When working in the round, a complete round encompasses all stitches on the needles. When working the heel flap, a row consists of 25 stitches (child size) or 37 stitches (adult size) on a single needle, worked back and forth.
Additional Supplies
The pattern requires one set of double-pointed needles in the appropriate size, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and optionally stitch markers to help track the beginning of each round. Needle size should be adjusted as needed to achieve the specified gauge for your chosen yarn weight.
