Sockin' Around the Christmas Tree Socks

Project Overview

Sockin' Around the Christmas Tree is a festive Christmas-themed sock pattern designed by Corrine Walcher. This intermediate-level knitting project showcases decorative cabled Christmas trees on the front panel, complemented by peppermint-twist cables that run continuously around the leg. The pattern is specifically designed to highlight the beautiful colorways from the Sweet Mountain Crafts Christmasy Set, making it an ideal choice for knitters looking to create coordinated holiday hosiery.

What Is Being Made

These are hand-knit socks featuring festive holiday motifs. The design includes prominent cabled Christmas trees displayed on the front panel, with decorative peppermint-twist cables wrapping around the entire circumference of the sock. The toe and heel are constructed using a coordinating mini skein from the Sweet Mountain Crafts Christmasy Set, creating visual interest through color coordination. The socks are available in three sizes: Small (7" around unstretched), Medium (8" around unstretched), and Large (9" around unstretched).

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level pattern employs several key knitting techniques. Cable knitting is the primary decorative technique, with Christmas tree cables featured prominently on the front panel and peppermint-twist cables running around the sock. The socks are knit in the round, a fundamental technique for sock construction that creates seamless, tubular fabric. The pattern uses an afterthought heel method, which allows knitters to pick up stitches and knit the heel after the main body is complete, rather than turning the heel during initial construction. This technique offers flexibility and is popular among sock knitters for its ease of modification and repair.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the sock is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric base. The decorative elements are achieved through cable stitches, specifically Christmas tree cables on the front panel and peppermint-twist cables that encircle the leg. These cable patterns add texture, dimension, and festive visual appeal to the finished socks. The gauge for this pattern is 8 stitches per inch when working stockinette stitch in the round, which is typical for fingering-weight yarn construction.

Materials and Yarn

The recommended yarn is Sweet Mountain Crafts Scree Sock, a fingering-weight yarn composed of 80% superwash merino wool and 20% nylon. Each 100-gram skein contains 389 yards of yarn. The Sweet Mountain Crafts Christmasy Set includes a coordinating 20-gram mini skein, which is used for the toe and afterthought heel, creating a cohesive color-blocked design. Knitters will also need approximately 10 inches of high-contrast scrap fingering-weight yarn in a color that stands out from the main colorway; this scrap yarn is used for afterthought heel placement and is later removed and replaced with the actual heel stitches.

Needles and Tools

The pattern calls for size 2 US (2.75 mm) needles. Knitters may choose between two needle configurations: a set of 5 double-pointed needles or two circular needles. Both options are suitable for knitting socks in the round. Needle size should be adjusted as needed to achieve the specified gauge of 8 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch.

Yarn Weight and Difficulty

This pattern is worked in 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, both of which fall within the fingering-weight category ideal for sock knitting. The project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic sock construction techniques and are comfortable working with cables and managing multiple stitches on needles. The combination of cable work and the afterthought heel method requires intermediate-level skills and attention to stitch patterns.
