Product Description

Socks are made up of geometrical shapes. The leg and foot are cylinders, the heel flap is a rectangle, the heel is a hemisphere, the gusset is a triangle, and the toe is a trapezoid! So to honour this discovery, I have designed this simple pattern. The circles are blurry owing to using a marled yarn on a solid background, but you can create a sharper effect if you use a solid yarn on a marled background. You could experiment with 2 solid colours - just be as creative as you want! The socks are knitted cuff down with heel flap. The heel, sole and toe are worked with 2 strands of yarn held together on alternate rows, so creating a lovely thick, comfortable sole to walk on with reduced chance of wearing through. Instructions are given in 3 sizes: slimmer foot woman/teenager; average foot woman/slim man; and broader foot/average man.

SOCK GEOMETRY: 'CIRCLES' by The Wee Duchess

What is Being Made

SOCK GEOMETRY: 'CIRCLES' is a downloadable knitting pattern for socks designed by The Wee Duchess. The pattern features a geometric circle motif that celebrates the mathematical shapes inherent in sock construction. The circles are created through simple colour work and appear soft and organic when knitted with variegated yarn on a solid background, though knitters can experiment with solid colours for sharper definition or marled backgrounds for alternative effects.

Design Concept and Inspiration

This pattern is grounded in the observation that socks are fundamentally composed of simple geometric shapes: the leg and foot form cylinders, the heel flap creates a rectangle, the heel itself is part of a sphere, the ankle and gusset section form a triangle, and the toe becomes a trapezoid. The circle motif honours this geometric foundation while offering creative flexibility in colour selection and yarn pairing.

Techniques Used

  • Cuff-down construction, beginning at the top of the sock and working downward to the toe
  • Heel flap method for structured heel shaping
  • Simple colour work using only 2 colour strands, making it accessible for intermediate knitters new to colourwork
  • Double-stranded knitting on alternate rows in the heel, sole, and toe sections to create reinforced, durable fabric
  • Strategic yarn doubling to produce a thick, comfortable, and bouncy sole with increased wear resistance

Stitches and Stitch Details

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern description, the design employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with colour work techniques. The pattern uses straightforward knitting suitable for intermediate-level crafters who have experience with basic stitches but are ready to tackle simple colour work. The two-colour stranding creates the geometric circle pattern across the leg portion of the sock.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

SOCK GEOMETRY: 'CIRCLES' is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is a standard weight for sock knitting that produces fabric with good stitch definition and durability. The pattern accommodates creative yarn choices: variegated yarn paired with solid background yarn produces soft, diffused circles, while two solid colours create sharper geometric definition. Knitters may also experiment with solid-coloured circles on marled yarn backgrounds. Specific needle sizes and yardage requirements are included in the full pattern instructions, which are provided in multiple sizes.

Skill Level

This pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic sock construction and are ready to incorporate simple colour work into their projects. The use of only 2 colour strands keeps the colourwork manageable while building confidence in stranded knitting techniques.

Pattern Features

  • Multiple size options provided in the downloadable PDF instructions
  • Flexible colour experimentation encouraged for personalisation
  • Reinforced sole construction using doubled yarn for extended sock lifespan
  • Comfortable, bouncy sole designed for everyday wear
  • Suitable for knitters seeking to develop colour work skills without overwhelming complexity
