SoCal Sunset Ombre Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

Project Overview

The SoCal Sunset Baby Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed by Nicolle Bernard that creates a finished blanket measuring 26 x 36 inches (or 26 x 30 inches without fringe). This downloadable PDF pattern produces a soft, colorful baby blanket featuring an ombre color-blocking effect inspired by warm sunset tones.

What Is Being Made

This project creates a cozy baby blanket with a beautiful ombre gradient effect achieved through strategic color blocking. The blanket combines three coordinating yarn colors to produce a sunset-inspired aesthetic, transitioning from warm peachy and red tones to a soft neutral white or cream base. The finished blanket includes decorative fringe detailing along the edges, adding texture and visual interest to the piece.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The SoCal Sunset Baby Blanket uses fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The primary stitch used throughout the pattern is the half double crochet (hdc), which creates a fabric with good drape and structure ideal for baby blankets. The pattern also incorporates chain stitches (ch) for foundation and stitch spaces, and utilizes stitch spaces (sp) to create texture and visual definition within the color blocks.

The color-blocking technique is a key design element, where different yarn colors are worked in distinct sections to create the ombre effect. Fringe is added as a finishing technique, created using a cardboard template to ensure consistent fringe length throughout the blanket edges.

Materials and Specifications

  • Yarn: Baby weight yarn (category 3), requiring 1 skein each of 3 colors. The sample pattern uses Bernat Softee Baby in Soft Red, Soft Peach, and Antique White
  • Hook: Size 5 mm crochet hook
  • Additional Supplies: Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, scissors, and a 3-4 inch cut of cardboard for creating uniform fringe

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 rows by 16 stitches per 4 x 4 inch square, which helps ensure the blanket reaches the intended finished dimensions. Maintaining proper gauge is important for achieving the correct finished size and fabric drape.

Color Selection Guidance

The designer recommends choosing three coordinating colors to achieve the ombre effect: two variations of your main color (one dark and one light) paired with a coordinating neutral. In the sample, warm peachy and red tones are balanced with an antique white or cream color rather than a bright white, creating a cohesive warm-toned palette. This color strategy allows crafters to customize the blanket while maintaining the sunset-inspired aesthetic.

Pattern Format

This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF and is written using US crochet terminology. The pattern includes standard crochet abbreviations and is designed for beginner-level crocheters, making it an accessible project for those new to the craft or looking for a straightforward, rewarding make.
