Snuggly V-Neck Jumper – Free Knitting Pattern in Paintbox Yarns Baby DK

This Snuggly V-Neck Sweater is a classic, wearable knitting pattern from Paintbox Yarns, designed for confident knitters who enjoy structured, seamed construction. The finished garment is a fitted V-neck jumper with set-in sleeves, worked in a clean stocking stitch fabric that lets the yarn's colour do the talking. It is available as a free downloadable PDF and is rated advanced in difficulty, making it an excellent project for knitters looking to refine their shaping and finishing skills.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a V-neck pullover sweater with a neat ribbed hem, cuffs, and neckband. The jumper is designed to be close-fitting with a shaped body, tapered sleeves, and a precisely worked V-neck opening. Ten sizes are provided, fitting bust measurements from 81 cm to 127 cm (32 in to 50 in), with actual garment measurements at the underarm ranging from 94 cm to 143 cm (37 in to 56¼ in). The finished length from the back neck ranges from 56 cm to 60 cm (22 in to 23½ in), and sleeve length ranges from 32 cm to 34 cm (12½ in to 13½ in), making it a comfortable, everyday-length jumper.

Construction Techniques

The Snuggly V-Neck Sweater is worked using a bottom-up, worked flat, seamed construction method. Each main piece — the back, front, and two sleeves — is knitted separately as flat panels and then joined together using seaming. This traditional approach gives the finished garment excellent structure and durability, and it allows knitters to block each piece individually before assembly for a polished result.

  • Bottom-up construction: Each piece begins at the lower hem edge and is worked upward toward the shoulders, which is the classic approach for shaped garments and allows easy length adjustments.
  • Worked flat: All pieces are knitted back and forth in rows on straight or circular needles, as opposed to knitting in the round. This means the knitter works both right-side and wrong-side rows throughout.
  • Seamed finishing: The completed panels are sewn together using mattress stitch or a similar seaming method to join the side seams, shoulder seams, and sleeve seams before setting in the sleeves.
  • V-neck shaping: The front neckline is divided at the centre and each side is worked separately with decreases to create the characteristic V-shape. Shaping involves techniques such as sl2togK (slip 2 stitches as though to knit 2 together) and p2sso (pass 2 slipped stitches over) for clean, symmetrical decreases.
  • Neckband pick-up: A 4mm circular needle is used to pick up and knit stitches around the completed V-neck opening to work the ribbed neckband, which requires working in the round or back and forth on a circular needle for ease of handling around the curved neckline.

Stitches Used

The pattern uses a focused selection of classic knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch): The primary fabric of the jumper, created by knitting all right-side rows and purling all wrong-side rows. It produces a smooth, flat surface on the right side and is ideal for showcasing solid or tonal yarn colours.
  • Rib stitch: Used for the welts (lower hems), cuffs, and neckband to provide elasticity and a neat, professional edge. Rib stitch alternates knit and purl stitches within the same row.
  • Knit (K) and Purl (P): The two foundational stitches that form all the fabric in this pattern.
  • Slip stitch decreases: Including sl2togK (slip 2 stitches as if to knit 2 together) and p2sso (pass 2 slipped stitches over), used for precise, centred decreases particularly at the V-neck shaping.
  • Standard increases
