Snowflake 3 Piece Knitted Set by Caroline Richards
What is Being Made
The Snowflake 3 piece set is a coordinated knitting pattern collection designed for reborn dolls measuring 16–22 inches or for newborn and 0–3 month old babies. The set comprises three separate garments: dungarees, booties, and hats, all featuring a charming snowflake design theme. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Caroline Richards provides multiple size options to accommodate different doll and baby dimensions, including specific instructions for 21–22" dolls, 16–18" dolls, and 19–20" dolls, as well as corresponding infant sizes.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and decorative techniques. The pattern utilizes stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric that forms the base of each garment. Colorwork techniques are incorporated through the use of a main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC) to create the snowflake motif across the pieces. The pattern includes increases to shape garment pieces and achieve proper fit, and button closures are integrated into the dungaree design for functional fastening and ease of dressing dolls or babies.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses essential knitting stitches and abbreviations including:
- K (knit) – the fundamental knit stitch
- P (purl) – the reverse of the knit stitch
- Inc (increase) – methods to add stitches for shaping
- KFB (knit into front and back of next stitch) – a specific increase technique that creates two stitches from one
- st st (stocking stitch) – the primary fabric structure created by alternating knit and purl rows
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Snowflake set is worked in double knit (DK) weight yarn, a versatile mid-weight yarn ideal for creating detailed garments with good stitch definition. Yarn quantities vary by size: the largest size (21–22" doll or 0–3 month baby) requires 150 grams of double knit wool in the main color and 60 grams in a contrasting color, while smaller sizes use proportionally less yarn. The pattern specifies King Cole Cherished acrylic yarn in DK weight for the sample garment, featuring three colorways: White (1410), Nickel (1426), and Sky (1412), which together create the snowflake design.
Needles Required
The pattern calls for two needle sizes to achieve proper fabric tension and structure. Needle sizes range from 2.75mm to 4mm depending on the garment size being knitted. Smaller needles (ranging from 2.75mm to 3.25mm) are used for ribbed or fitted sections, while larger needles (3.25mm to 4mm) are used for the main fabric. This two-needle approach allows knitters to create neat, elastic edges while maintaining consistent stocking stitch in the body of each piece.
Tension and Gauge
Achieving proper tension is critical for this project. The pattern specifies that using 4mm needles and working in stocking stitch, 22 stitches and 28 rows should measure 10 centimeters (4 inches) square. Knitters should swatch and measure their tension before beginning the full project to ensure garments fit correctly across all three sizes.
Pattern Format and Accessibility
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased. The PDF format includes all necessary instructions, abbreviations, and sizing information in one comprehensive document, suitable for both experienced knitters and those working at an intermediate skill level.
