Snow Pea Bag by Lisa Richardson in Rowan Creative Linen – Pattern Summary

The Snow Pea Bag is a stylish, structured knitted bag designed by Lisa Richardson and published by Rowan. This intermediate-level knitting pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and produces a finished bag measuring 35 cm wide and 39 cm long, with side panels and a base measuring 4.5 cm in depth. The design is knitted in Rowan Creative Linen, a DK-weight yarn that gives the finished bag a beautifully textured, natural appearance with excellent stitch definition.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a complete knitted tote-style bag with a structured body, integrated side panels, a flat base, and handles (referred to as Träger in the German-language pattern). The bag is a practical everyday accessory, combining clean geometric shaping with tactile stitch textures. The photographed sample is worked in Foggy 624, a muted, earthy colourway from the Rowan Creative Linen range that highlights the natural linen-cotton fibre blend beautifully.

Materials Used

  • Yarn: Rowan Creative Linen, a DK-weight yarn — 3 x 100 g balls required. The photographed version uses shade Foggy 624.
  • Needles: 4 mm and 4.5 mm knitting needles are both required for this project.

Tension / Gauge

Achieving the correct tension is important for this project, as the bag has specific finished dimensions. Two separate tension swatches are required:

  • 18 stitches and 25 rows = 10 x 10 cm in the main stitch pattern, using 4.5 mm needles.
  • 19 stitches and 33 rows = 10 x 10 cm in seed stitch (Perlmuster), using 4.5 mm needles.

Techniques and Construction

The bag is constructed in separate pieces that are worked flat and then assembled. The main body panel is worked in rib stitch (Rippmuster), which creates a stretchy, vertically textured fabric with excellent elasticity and body. The ribbing is worked until the panel reaches 39 cm in length, ending with a wrong-side row before all stitches are cast off in rib.

The side panels, base, and handles are worked as a single continuous piece, beginning with a cast-on of 9 stitches on 4.5 mm needles. This section is worked in seed stitch (Perlmuster), a classic textured stitch that alternates knit and purl stitches across every row to create a firm, non-curling fabric — ideal for structural bag panels. The first half of the base measures 17.5 cm, at which point markers are placed at each end of the last row. The work then continues straight for a further 39 cm from the marked row, creating the side and handle sections.

Stitches Used

  • Rib Stitch (Rippmuster): Used for the main body of the bag. Worked by alternating knit and purl stitches in a consistent pattern across rows, rib creates a structured yet slightly elastic fabric that holds its shape well.
  • Seed Stitch / Moss Stitch (Perlmuster): Used for the side panels, base, and handles. In seed stitch, stitches are worked as knit over purl and purl over knit on every row, producing a dense, reversible, textured fabric that lies flat without curling — making it particularly suitable for bag construction where stability and firmness are desirable.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty. Knitters should be comfortable working both knit and purl stitches, managing two different stitch patterns simultaneously across separate pieces, and working with row markers and shaped construction. The use of two
