Materials: For these crochet sea otters you’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need four colours of yarn: acorn, 1/3 of a 100-yard skein, light beige (1/6), murky browm (1/6) and a left-over bit of sheep black. For the eyes I’ve used 7 & 6 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill to stuff the otters and a hard (pet or nail) brush to make the baby look more fuzzy. Lopi colour numbers: 0053, 0086, 1420, 0052.

Sno & Snoosle Sea Otters Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

Sno & Snoosle is a downloadable crochet pattern designed by Sonja van der Wijk (Son's Popkes) for creating two adorable sea otter toys. The pattern includes instructions for making an adult otter measuring 8 inches (20 cm) in length and a baby otter measuring 5.5 inches (12 cm) in length. These amigurumi-style toys are perfect for collectors, children, or as handmade gifts, and their finished size can vary depending on yarn weight and individual crochet tension.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Sno & Snoosle pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques to create three-dimensional toy forms. The dolls are worked in the round using continuous spirals, a common method for creating seamless, stuffed crochet toys. This technique requires the crocheter to use a stitch marker to clearly mark the beginning of each round, moving the marker up as each new round begins. The pattern also includes color changes throughout the design, with more complex color transitions written in color-coded text to guide the crocheter through the process. All color changes are executed in the final loop of a stitch, ensuring clean transitions between colors.

Crochet Stitches

While the pattern description does not specify every individual stitch used, the construction method indicates use of standard American crochet terminology throughout. The pattern is written exclusively in standard American crochet terms, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with this terminology system. Typical amigurumi patterns of this style employ basic stitches such as single crochet for structure, increases and decreases for shaping, and specialized techniques for creating the three-dimensional forms necessary for realistic toy construction.

Materials: Yarn and Hooks

The pattern calls for aran weight yarn, which provides the appropriate thickness for creating toys of the specified dimensions. The designer strongly recommends using fuzzy yarn to achieve the characteristic soft, textured appearance of sea otters. The specific yarn used in the original design is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn, which provides both the desired fuzzy texture and the durability needed for a toy that may be handled frequently. The finished size of the otters is dependent on both the yarn weight used and the individual crocheter's tension, so experimentation with materials may be necessary to achieve desired proportions. The pattern does not specify hook size in the provided excerpt, though crocheters should select a hook appropriate for their chosen aran weight yarn to achieve proper gauge.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle projects involving color changes, working in the round, and shaping techniques. The color-coded instructions help guide crocheters through the more complex color transitions, making the pattern accessible despite its intermediate classification.
