Product Description

When you look at illusion knitting from directly in front you only see narrow stripes. When you look at this shawl from the side you will see an image of Severus Snape.

The shawl measures approximately 140 cm wide and 70 cm high (without it’s border) when knitted in DK yarn with 3.5 mm needles. It uses approximately 400 metres of each of two colours of yarn and an extra 150 metres for the border.

The centre section could be used as a wall-hanging, or a panel in a throw.

You could use other yarns but this might change the overall size.

What is Being Made

The Snape Illusion Shawl is an illusion knit design featuring Severus Snape, created by Steve Plummer and Pat Ashforth. This knitted piece is designed primarily as a shawl but offers versatile uses as a wall-hanging or decorative panel for bed covers. The illusion effect creates a portrait of Severus Snape that is best viewed from the side, making it a unique decorative textile project that combines functional wearability with artistic visual impact.

Design Features and Viewing Options

The shawl incorporates an illusion knitting technique that produces a striking three-section appearance in the finished piece. The pattern includes an alternative method for knitters who prefer a more conventional viewing angle, presenting Snape's head against a continuous light background. For advanced customization, the pattern notes that two different Snape illusion panels (including another design viewed from below) can be combined with modifications to create an interesting composite effect.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level knitting project employs illusion knitting techniques, a specialized method that creates images through strategic color changes and stitch placement. The illusion effect relies on the viewer's perspective and the contrast between different colored sections to reveal the portrait. The pattern uses standard knitting stitches worked in multiple colors to build the image, with careful attention to row-by-row color placement to achieve the desired visual effect when viewed from the appropriate angle.
