Product Description
Dormice are tiny mammals that live in the south of England. Only 6 to 9 cm long, they can hibernate for upto 9 months of the year in a nest of leaves and grass on the ground. They often hibernate curled in to a ball with their tail wrapped around them. This pattern is to make a lifesize knitted dormouse to use a toy or decoration. If to be used as a decoration, a fillable 8 cm glass bauble from Hobbycraft makes a good substitute nest.
The dormouse is made using 2.75 mm straight and double pointed needles. A body and head is knitted in one piece and the limbs and tail are joined on and knitted in i-cord. There is very little sewing involved. The work is in stocking stitch. The knitting and sewing skills required are not extensive but the shaping of the animal requires attention to detail. This means the pattern is more suitable for intermediate knitters. If you wish to substitute yarns, the dormouse may be made of any golden brown and cream 4 ply yarn and the 2.75 mm needles.
Sleepy Dormouse Knitted Toy by Jackie Jeffery
What is Being Made
The Sleepy Dormouse is a knitted toy design created by independent designer Jackie Jeffery. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a soft, stuffed dormouse figure, combining a structured head and body section into a cohesive plush toy suitable for display or play.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting construction methods appropriate for toy making. The design uses a sequential building approach, beginning with casting on for the head section and progressing through structured rows to establish the toy's form. The pattern incorporates shaping techniques visible in the progression from Row 21 onward, allowing the knitter to develop dimensional features and proportions that define the dormouse's appearance.
Stitches and Construction Methods
While specific stitch abbreviations are detailed within the pattern documentation, the Sleepy Dormouse utilizes standard knitting stitches organized in a logical sequence. The pattern includes a dedicated abbreviations section for quick reference, and gauge information is provided to ensure proper sizing and fabric density. The head and body are constructed as integrated sections, with the pattern guiding knitters through distinct phases of assembly.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
- Yarn Weight: 4-ply or DK (double knit) weight yarn, providing a smooth, manageable fabric suitable for detailed toy work
- Needles: Appropriate needles for 4-ply and DK yarn (specific needle size referenced in gauge section)
- Additional Materials: Stuffing material for filling the completed toy pieces
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills in casting on, basic stitches, and reading pattern instructions. The structured progression and inclusion of visual references (Figures 1-3) support knitters in understanding shaping and assembly steps.
