Product Description
This cardigan solved a problem for me: a sweater is usually too warm and a cardigan needs at least one button if it is too cool but I never manage to sew on the buttons. For this cardigan I have solved this with a double-knit band across the chest, which holds the cardigan together. Thanks to the double-knit inserts, and a combination of stockinette and reverse stockinette stitch pattern, this design is reversible. No matter how I take it off in the evening, I can put it on again in the morning and it is never wrong.
Skully Cardigan by Butzeria
What is Being Made
The Skully Cardigan is a reversible knitted cardigan designed by independent designer Butzeria. This garment solves the layering dilemma between a full sweater and a traditional buttoned cardigan by featuring a double-knit band across the chest that holds the cardigan together without requiring buttons. The reversible design means the cardigan can be worn either side out, making it a versatile piece that works whether you put it on right-side-out or inside-out.
The cardigan is available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5XL, with finished bust measurements from 81cm (32") to 162cm (64"). This extensive size range accommodates a wide variety of body types and fit preferences.
Techniques Used
The Skully Cardigan employs several key knitting techniques that contribute to its unique reversible quality. The primary technique is the use of a double-knit band, which creates a structured chest closure without traditional buttons. This double-knit construction provides both functionality and visual interest.
The reversibility of this cardigan comes from a thoughtful combination of stitch patterns. The designer has incorporated both stockinette stitch and reverse stockinette stitch throughout the garment. By strategically placing these complementary stitches, the cardigan maintains an attractive appearance regardless of which side faces outward. This technique requires careful planning during the design phase to ensure both sides of the finished garment are equally wearable and aesthetically pleasing.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch: A fundamental knitting stitch that creates a smooth, V-patterned fabric on the right side. This stitch forms the base of much of the cardigan's structure.
- Reverse Stockinette Stitch: The inverse of stockinette stitch, showing the bumpy purl side as the public face. This stitch is combined with stockinette throughout the pattern to create the reversible design.
- Double-Knit Band: A specialized technique used for the chest closure band that creates a double layer of fabric. This band serves both a functional purpose (holding the cardigan closed) and a design purpose (contributing to the reversible aesthetic).
Materials
This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits to a balanced gauge suitable for garment construction. DK weight provides enough structure for a cardigan while remaining lightweight enough for layering purposes.
Knitters will need appropriate needles for DK weight yarn, typically in the US 3-5 (3.25-3.75mm) range, though the specific needle size should be confirmed in the complete pattern instructions to achieve proper gauge. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format, allowing knitters to access detailed instructions, sizing charts, and any additional notes on fitting and construction.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. Knitters should have solid foundational skills including the ability to work stockinette and reverse stockinette stitches, understand gauge, and follow multi-size patterns. The reversible construction and double-knit band technique add complexity beyond beginner projects, making this an excellent choice for knitters looking to expand their skills with a wearable, practical garment.
