NEW - now included for download is a 21 page, 84 color photograph notated tutorial for knitting the Inishmore Cap, which uses the same construction as the Siobhan, but has a smooth stockinette texture. Contact me at woolybearhandknits@yahoo.com after purchasing the pattern if you would like this.

The brim's structural integrity comes from the recommended cast on, the tight gauge, shaping, and leaving the wraps in place unless otherwise specified.

Siobhan Cap by Cheryl Andrews

What is Being Made

The Siobhan Cap is a fun and flirty feminine version of the traditional Irish flat cap, designed for adult medium sizing. This structured hat features a distinctive double brim with self-supporting construction that requires no cardboard or plastic reinforcement, making it an elegant and practical accessory suitable for everyday wear or special occasions.

Design Features and Construction

This knitted cap showcases several sophisticated design elements that contribute to its polished appearance and functional structure. The hat includes a decorative picot edging that adds a delicate feminine touch, a fitted hem for comfort and security, mesh panels on both the sides and top that provide breathability and visual interest, and a double brim that frames the face while maintaining its shape through careful yarn selection and knitting technique.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Knit-on cast on for creating a secure foundation edge
  • Flat construction on circular needles worked back and forth rather than in the round for the brim section
  • Mesh stitch work for the side and top panels, creating openwork sections
  • Picot edging technique for decorative detailing
  • Hem construction for a finished, professional appearance
  • Stockinette stitch as the primary stitch pattern base

Stitches and Gauge

The pattern is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for a structured hat. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving proper fit and ensuring the hat maintains its intended shape and drape.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This project requires approximately 180 yards of worsted weight yarn. The sample was knitted in Classic Elite Classic Silk, a premium blend containing 50% cotton, 30% silk, and 20% nylon, with a yardage of 135 yards per 50-gram skein. The pattern specifically recommends selecting a yarn with a fairly firm hand to ensure the hat holds its structure effectively, particularly important given the self-supporting brim design that relies on yarn integrity rather than internal bracing.

Needles and Tools

Two size 6 circular needles are required for this project. One needle should be 16 inches in length for working the brim and body sections, while the second needle can be 16 inches or longer depending on personal preference and hand size. The use of two circular needles allows for flexible construction and the ability to work both flat and in-the-round sections as the pattern requires.

Sizing and Customization

The pattern is designed for adult medium sizing. Crafters can adjust the fit by moving up or down a needle size to increase or decrease the overall dimensions, or by adding elastic inside the hem for a more secure fit. This flexibility makes the pattern adaptable to various head sizes and personal preferences.

Difficulty Level

The Siobhan Cap is rated as an intermediate knitting project, suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with circular needles, managing multiple stitch patterns, and understanding shaping techniques. The combination of flat and in-the-round sections, mesh stitch work, and the need to maintain structural integrity requires intermediate-level skills and attention to detail.
