Product Description

I really enjoy knitting the Raglan sweater. All of my sweater designs use the Raglan technique. It is easy to use once you have mastered the technique. It can be daunting to try the Raglan sweater for the first time. I have heard from many knitters that they would love a Raglan sweater tutorial. This is my first sweater tutorial for a basic Raglan sweater. I will be creating more raglan sweater tutorials with more complicated designs.

This tutorial is divided into 6 steps: 1: Knit the Collar 2: Split stitches into 4 sections 3: Work the Yoke of the sweater 4: Divide off sleeve stitches 5: Work body of sweater 6: Work Sleeves

Each section includes a video tutorial. This tutorial shows how you will knit each section.

Simple Raglan Sweater Baby Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

The Simple Raglan Sweater is a baby knitting pattern designed by Lara Simonson that creates a classic raglan-style pullover sweater for infants and toddlers. This pattern is available in six sizes to accommodate babies from newborn through 2 years old, making it a versatile design for growing children. The raglan construction features diagonal shaping lines that run from the underarm to the neckline, creating a flattering silhouette and allowing for ease of movement in a baby garment.

Sizes and Yardage Requirements

The pattern includes the following size options with corresponding yarn requirements:

  • Newborn: 180 yards (165 meters) for short version; 200 yards (180 meters) for long version
  • 3 months: 200 yards (180 meters) for short version; 230 yards (210 meters) for long version
  • 6 months: 220 yards (200 meters) for short version; 250 yards (225 meters) for long version
  • 12 months: 250 yards (225 meters) for short version; 285 yards (260 meters) for long version
  • 18 months: 300 yards (270 meters) for short version; 335 yards (300 meters) for long version
  • 2 years: 350 yards (315 meters) for short version; 375 yards (340 meters) for long version

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for KnitPicks Swish Worsted weight yarn or similar worsted weight yarn. Worsted weight yarn is a medium-weight option that works up quickly while providing good stitch definition and durability for baby garments.

Needles: 5mm (US size 8) circular needles in 16-inch (40 centimeter) length are required for this project.

Gauge and Tension

Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. This pattern requires a gauge of 18 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in stockinette stitch. Knitters should swatch before beginning and adjust needle size as needed to match the specified gauge, as variations in tension will affect the final fit of the baby sweater.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Simple Raglan Sweater employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level knitters. The primary stitch used throughout the garment is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a knit side and purl side.

Essential stitches and abbreviations used in this pattern include:

  • k (knit): The basic knit stitch that forms the foundation of stockinette stitch
  • p (purl): The reverse of the knit stitch, used to create the wrong side of stockinette stitch
  • kfb (knit in front and back of stitch): An increase technique that creates one additional stitch by working into both the front and back loops of a single stitch
  • pfb (purl in front and back of stitch): The purl equivalent of kfb, used for increasing stitches on wrong-side rows
  • k2tog (knit two together): A right-leaning decrease that combines two stitches into one
  • ssk (slip, slip, knit): A left-leaning decrease worked by slipping two stitches individually, then knitting them together through the back loops
  • p2tog (purl two together): A decrease worked on the purl side that combines two stitches into one

Pattern Construction

The pattern begins with a cast-on of 20 stitches for the newborn size, with adjusted stitch counts provided in parentheses for larger sizes. The foundation is established by alternating knit and purl rows to create stockinette stitch. The pattern includes detailed instructions for calculating and checking gauge before proceeding, ensuring that knitters achieve the proper tension for a well-fitting baby sweater.
