Just Keep Knitting, Pam
Simple & Easy Hat for the Whole Family by Pam Grushkin
What Is Being Made
This knitting pattern collection features three versatile beanie hat designs suitable for the entire family, from infants through large adults. The pattern includes a Traditional Beanie as the foundational design, plus two creative variations: a Tea Bag Hat and a Gathered Hat. Each version offers a beginner-friendly approach to hat construction, with sizing options spanning from 15" head circumference (infant) to 23" (large adult).
Sizing Options
The pattern provides five size increments to accommodate the whole family:
- Infant: 15" head circumference
- Small Child: 17" head circumference
- Child: 19" head circumference
- Teen or Small Woman: 21" head circumference
- Large Adult: 23" head circumference
Knitting Techniques Used
This beginner-level pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to hat construction. The design utilizes in-the-round knitting methods, with specific guidance provided through mock in-the-round swatch instructions. The pattern demonstrates how to work circularly using appropriate needles for each yarn weight, allowing knitters to develop core skills in gauge management and circular construction. The Tea Bag and Gathered Hat variations notably eliminate the need for double-pointed needles, making them accessible options for knitters who prefer working exclusively with circular needles.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern focuses on essential knitting stitches and straightforward construction methods. Gauge is a critical component, with specific stitch counts provided for each yarn weight: 3.5 stitches per inch for bulky weight, 4.5 stitches per inch for worsted weight, and 5.5 stitches per inch for DK weight. These gauge specifications ensure proper fit across all five sizes and help knitters understand how yarn weight affects finished dimensions.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern accommodates three different yarn weights, allowing knitters to choose based on preference, climate, and available materials:
- Bulky Weight Hat: Requires 75–150 yards depending on size (smallest to largest). Uses #10.5 US circular needles (16" length) and #10.5 US double-pointed needles for the traditional beanie version.
- Worsted Weight Hat: Requires 95–175 yards depending on size. Uses #7 US circular needles (16" length) and #7 US double-pointed needles for the traditional beanie version. The pictured sample was created using 2 skeins of Schulana Cashmere-Trend in Color 303, a 100% cashmere worsted weight yarn with 70 yards per skein.
- DK Weight Hat: Requires 140–180 yards depending on size. Uses #5 US circular needles (16" length) and #5 US double-pointed needles for the traditional beanie version.
All needle sizes are interchangeable based on individual gauge; the pattern notes that knitters should use the size needed to obtain the specified gauge for their chosen yarn weight.
Design Variations
The pattern offers creative flexibility through its three distinct hat styles. The Traditional Beanie provides a classic, timeless silhouette. The Tea Bag Hat introduces a unique shaping element, while the Gathered Hat features alternative construction that creates a different visual effect. Both variation versions eliminate the requirement for double-pointed needles, streamlining the knitting process for those who prefer circular needle construction throughout.
Ideal For
This pattern is designed for beginner knitters seeking to develop skills in circular knitting and hat construction. The multiple sizing options make it an excellent choice for gift-giving across different age groups and head sizes, while the yarn weight variations allow knitters to adapt the pattern to their yarn stash or climate preferences.
