What is Being Made
The Silversmith Beanie is a one-size cable knit beanie designed by Meiju Kallio. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished hat with a head circumference of approximately 22–23.5 inches (55–59 cm), making it a versatile fit for most adult wearers. The beanie showcases decorative cable textures throughout, combining multiple cable techniques for visual interest and depth.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level pattern employs cable knitting as its primary technique. Cables are created by crossing groups of stitches over one another to form raised, twisted patterns that add texture and dimension to the finished fabric. The Silversmith Beanie features a mix of cable scales, from delicate minicables to a prominent staghorn cable pattern, demonstrating varied cable work within a single garment. Cable knitting requires careful stitch management and the use of a cable needle to temporarily hold stitches while others are worked, creating the characteristic twisted effect.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates several cable stitch variations:
- 2/2 Right Cable (RC): A larger cable created by slipping 2 stitches onto a cable needle and holding them in back of the work, knitting the next 2 stitches, then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a 4-stitch cable with a rightward slant.
- 1/1 Right Cable (RC): A minicable formed by slipping 1 stitch onto a cable needle and holding it in back, knitting 1 stitch, then knitting the stitch from the cable needle. This produces a 2-stitch cable with a rightward slant.
- 1/1 Left Cable (LC): A minicable created by slipping 1 stitch onto a cable needle and holding it in front of the work, knitting 1 stitch, then knitting the stitch from the cable needle. This creates a 2-stitch cable with a leftward slant.
- Stockinette Stitch: Used as the base fabric, providing a smooth background that allows the cable patterns to stand out prominently.
Materials and Gauge
The Silversmith Beanie is worked in worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits up quickly and provides good stitch definition for cable work. The pattern is worked on US 7 (4.5 mm) needles in stockinette stitch, with a gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rows equaling 4 inches (10 cm). Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished hat size and ensuring the cable patterns display as intended.
