Garment Overview

Shinobi is a pullover sweater designed by Yoko Johnston that combines Japanese-inspired aesthetics with modern knitting techniques. The design takes its name from the Japanese word for ninja, referencing the chain-mail-like appearance created through strategic stitch patterning. Design Features

The sweater showcases five triangle motifs strategically placed on the front neck, sleeves, and sides of the body, serving as distinctive cool accents throughout the garment. Vertical ribbing runs down the sides of the body, providing both visual interest and structural support while contributing to the garment's overall stretch and recovery.

Stitch Techniques and Patterns

Shinobi employs a combination of two primary stitch patterns to achieve its signature texture:

• Twisted Rib: Creates vertical lines of texture that enhance the fitted appearance and provide elasticity to the garment
• Twisted Mesh: Produces an open, chain-mail-like texture reminiscent of traditional ninja armor, adding visual depth and breathability

Sizing and Fit

Shinobi is available in five sizes: XS, S, M, L, and XL, with finished bust circumferences ranging from 77.5 cm (31 inches) to 111.5 cm (43¾ inches) after blocking. The garment is designed with a fitted construction intended for zero or negative ease wear.

Yarn and Materials

This project uses Sport to DK weight yarn, specifically Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend, which combines 70% Merino wool with 30% silk. This yarn blend provides a luxurious feel, excellent drape, and natural elasticity. The yardage requirement is 137 meters (150 yards) per 50-gram ball, with quantities varying by size: XS through M require 6 balls, while L and XL require 7 balls.

Needles and Notions

The project requires 5 mm (US 8) needles in a 60 cm length for the body. Essential notions include waste yarn for provisional cast-on or stitch holding, eight stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and appropriate tools for seaming and finishing.
