Shine Cardigan by Fluffy Su Don

What is Being Made

The Shine Cardigan is a top-down knitted cardigan designed for infants and young children, available in ten sizes ranging from newborn (0/3 months) through 8 years old. The garment features a classic cardigan silhouette with button closure and is worked in sections, combining flat and circular knitting techniques. Chest circumference ranges from 46cm to 68cm, with corresponding back lengths from approximately 32cm to 53cm, allowing for proper fit across multiple age ranges and growth stages.

Construction Technique

The Shine Cardigan employs a top-down construction method, a popular approach in modern knitting that begins at the neckline and works downward. This technique offers several advantages: the knitter can try on the garment during construction for proper fit, and the piece can be easily adjusted in length before binding off. After the initial yoke is established, the pattern divides the work into separate sections for the body and sleeves, allowing different working methods to be applied to each component.

The body is worked flat, meaning the knitter works back and forth in rows on circular needles, creating two separate edges that will eventually be seamed or left as finished edges. This flat construction is ideal for the front and back panels of the cardigan, providing clean edges and straightforward shaping.

The sleeves are worked in the round using double-pointed needles, a technique that creates seamless, tubular sleeves. Working in the round eliminates the need for seaming the sleeve seams, resulting in a more polished finish and reducing finishing work.

Stitches and Shaping

The Shine Cardigan utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and increases that create the garment's structure:

  • Stocking stitch forms the primary fabric, created by alternating knit stitches on right-side rows with purl stitches on wrong-side rows when working flat. This classic stitch produces a smooth, V-textured fabric that is versatile and flattering.
  • Raglan increases (RI) are employed to shape the yoke, creating the characteristic diagonal lines that extend from the neckline to the armholes. These increases are worked using M1R (make 1 right) and M1L (make 1 left) techniques, which create new stitches by picking up the horizontal strand between stitches and knitting into it.
  • Yarn overs (YO) add stitches while creating decorative holes, potentially adding visual interest to the design.
  • K2TOG (knit 2 together) decreases stitches on right-side rows, used for shaping and finishing.
  • M1A (make 1 stitch away) provides an alternative increase method for specific shaping needs.

The pattern uses stitch markers to denote important locations such as raglan increase points and sleeve divisions, helping the knitter maintain accuracy throughout construction. Stitch holders are employed to temporarily hold stitches when the work is divided into sections.

Materials and Gauge

The Shine Cardigan is designed to be worked in DMC Knitty 4 yarn, a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating garments with good drape and durability for children's wear. The yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 280 yards for the smallest size (0/3 months) to 850 yards for the largest size (8 years), with both main color (MC) and contrast color (CC) options available. Most sizes require 1 skein of contrast color, while main color requirements range from 1 to 5 skeins depending on the finished size.

The pattern calls for circular needles in 4mm and 3mm sizes and double-pointed needles in 4mm and 3mm, allowing for both the flat body sections and the in-the-round sleeve construction. Circular needles are available in 40cm and 60cm lengths to accommodate different stitch counts at various stages of construction.

The gauge is 22 stitches by 28 rows over 10 centimeters in stocking stitch on 4mm needles after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, and blocking—the process of wetting and shaping the knitted fabric to even out stitches—is recommended to ensure accurate gauge and a professional appearance.

Additional notions include a 1cm button for the cardigan closure and standard knitting accessories such as markers and stitch holders.
