Product Description

This is a pattern for a knit wrap pattern that features three distinct stitches, two of which come to us from Japan. All are interesting and fun to knit. One is a distinct faggottig lace stitch, one is a cluster (smocked) stitch and the last is a mock cable stitch. Together, the three stitches make a unique and beautiful shawl. The stitches, although they are Japanese, are easily learned by American knitters, especially those who love unique stitches. All symbols have been “translated” to the ones that most Western knitters are used to seeing.

The pattern also contains instructions for an optional crocheted edging.

The stitches are charted only.

Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a good working knowledge of cable-lace knitting.) Skill Level for the optional Edging: Intermediate (assuming a working knowledge of crocheting).

Any heavy weight fingering yarn or sport weight will work for this pattern. No crochet hooks are needed if you don't want to crochet the optional edging.

Shinano Lace and Cluster Shawl by Linda Lehman

Project Overview

The Shinano Lace and Cluster Shawl is a lightweight summer wrap designed by Linda Lehman and published by Wearable Art Emporium. This intermediate-level crochet project creates an elegant, lacy accessory suitable for layering in air-conditioned spaces or wearing on cool summer evenings. The shawl combines traditional and contemporary stitch techniques to produce a garment that is both visually interesting and wearable without excessive weight.

Design and Construction Techniques

The Shinano Lace and Cluster Shawl showcases a thoughtful blend of two distinct stitching methods. The designer has combined a traditional Shetland stitch with a Japanese Cluster stitch, creating visual interest and texture variation throughout the piece. These complementary techniques work together to produce the signature lacy appearance while maintaining structural integrity. The pattern is designed for crafters with intermediate skill levels who have solid foundational knowledge of essential crochet techniques.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Shetland Stitch: A traditional lace stitch that contributes to the delicate, openwork quality of the shawl
  • Japanese Cluster Stitch: A contemporary stitch technique that adds dimensional texture and visual complexity to the design
  • Yarn overs and cluster stitches form the foundation of the pattern work

Yarn and Materials Requirements

The Shinano Lace and Cluster Shawl is worked in sport weight yarn, offering an ideal balance between drape and structure for a summer wrap. The main shawl body requires 1100 to 1250 yards of heavy fingering weight or sport weight yarn. The edging is worked separately using approximately 100 yards of the same or a coordinating yarn.

Construction requires U.S. Size #5 (3.50 mm) needles for the main shawl body, along with Size H and I crochet hooks for completing the edging. Additional tools include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and optional but recommended accessories such as a row counter and stitch markers to track progress through the pattern.

Skill Level and Pattern Suitability

This pattern is rated as Intermediate and assumes the crafter has a solid working knowledge of fundamental crochet techniques, including yarn overs and cluster stitches. The combination of two distinct stitch patterns requires attention to detail and pattern reading ability, making it an engaging project for experienced beginners and intermediate-level crocheters seeking to expand their technical skills.
