Product Description

I love making Crocheted Baskets, and these are so nice!! This pattern has two designs! That’s right, two shell baskets with handles, two different designs. These are big enough to use for a toy basket, or to store things in the bathroom….it is even cute enough to carry as a purse!

I also love texture and color, so designing this set of baskets was a lot of fun!

I love the shell pattern that is crocheted into this basket.

You will be holding two strands of yarn, and using an “L”; “K”

Red Heart Super Saver is my favorite choice for these baskets, as it is a stiffer yarn.

Shell Basket designs with handles, 9” diameter; 8” tall without the handles.

Shell Basket with Handles by Krissy's OTM Crochet

Project Overview

Shell Basket with Handles is a downloadable crochet pattern from Krissy's OTM Crochet (also known as Krissy's Wonders) that provides instructions for creating two variations of decorative storage baskets. These intermediate-level projects are designed to hold items while adding functional beauty to any space. The baskets feature textured shell stitch details and practical handles for easy carrying and display.

What Is Being Made

This pattern includes instructions for two distinct basket designs, each with integrated handles. The baskets are constructed as containers suitable for storage, organization, or decorative purposes. Both variations showcase shell stitch work as the primary design element, creating an attractive textured surface. The handles are worked as part of the overall construction, making these baskets both functional and visually appealing.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Shell Basket with Handles pattern employs several intermediate crochet techniques to create its distinctive appearance and structure. The primary construction method uses shell stitches, which create the characteristic scalloped, fan-like texture throughout the basket body. The pattern incorporates post stitches, specifically high back post half double crochet, which add dimensional texture and visual interest. Joining techniques are used to connect sections and create seamless transitions between pattern repeats. Working in back loops only is utilized in specific sections to create defined ridges and structural definition.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (CH): Foundation and spacing stitch
  • Single Crochet (SC): Tight, foundational stitch for structure
  • Half Double Crochet (HDC): Medium-height stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Double Crochet (DC): Taller stitch for creating openness and drape
  • Treble Crochet (TRB): Extra-tall stitch for creating shell formations
  • High Back Post Half Double Crochet (H BP HDC): Textured post stitch for dimensional detail
  • Slip Stitch (SLP ST): Joining and finishing stitch

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Shell Basket with Handles pattern is designed to work with worsted weight yarn held as two strands throughout construction. The pattern specifies that stiff yarns produce the best results, with Red Heart Super Saver recommended as an excellent choice for this project. Yarn quantities vary slightly between the two basket variations and handle options.

Yarn Quantities:

  • Basket 1 with Handles: 350 to 400 yards of Main Color (MC) and 350 to 400 yards of Contrasting Color (CC)
  • Basket 2 with Handles: 300 to 400 yards of MC, 250 to 300 yards of CC, and 100 to 150 yards of a second CC for handle variation

Crochet Hooks: The pattern utilizes three different hook sizes to achieve proper gauge and stitch definition: L-11/8mm, K-10.5/6.5mm, and G-6/4.0mm. The specific hook size used depends on the individual section of the pattern and desired fabric characteristics.

Pattern Structure and Design Elements

The pattern uses clear abbreviations and standard crochet notation to guide crafters through construction. Main Color (MC) and Contrasting Color (CC) create visual interest and definition between pattern sections. The use of repeat sequences, indicated by asterisks and multiplication notation (x), allows crafters to build the basket dimensions systematically. Working in back loops only in designated sections creates structural ridges that define the basket shape and add textural contrast to the shell stitch elements.
