Shawl and Cardigans in Sirdar Snuggly DK – Pattern 1578 (Downloadable PDF)

This downloadable PDF pattern from Sirdar offers a delightful collection of crochet designs including a shawl and cardigans, all worked in Sirdar Snuggly DK yarn. Whether you are looking for a cosy layering piece or a sweet, wearable garment, this pattern collection provides versatile options suitable for crochet enthusiasts who enjoy working with soft, lightweight double knitting weight yarn.

About the Designs

The pattern reference 1578 from Sirdar encompasses multiple projects within a single downloadable file, making it excellent value for crafters who want variety. The collection includes:

  • A Shawl: A crochet shawl designed to be a graceful, draped accessory. Shawls worked in DK weight yarn strike a lovely balance between warmth and lightness, making them ideal for transitional seasons. The shawl is likely constructed using a combination of foundational crochet stitches arranged to create an elegant, openwork or textured fabric.
  • Cardigans: One or more crochet cardigans are included in this pattern set. Crochet cardigans are classic wardrobe staples that can be worked in pieces and seamed together, or constructed in a more seamless style depending on the design. Cardigans in DK weight yarn are a popular choice as they produce a fabric with good stitch definition and a comfortable, wearable drape.

Craft and Techniques

All designs in this pattern are worked in crochet, making this an ideal pattern for those who prefer the hook over the needle. Crochet is well suited to garment construction, offering excellent structure and the ability to create both dense, warm fabrics and beautiful lacy, openwork designs depending on the stitch selection and hook size used.

Techniques likely featured across the shawl and cardigan designs include:

  • Foundation chains to begin each piece
  • Working in rows for flat garment panels such as fronts, backs, and sleeves
  • Shaping techniques including increases and decreases to achieve fitted or tailored silhouettes in the cardigans
  • Joining and seaming methods to assemble finished crochet pieces
  • Border and edging work to finish necklines, cuffs, button bands, and the perimeter of the shawl

Stitches Used

As is typical for crochet shawl and cardigan patterns worked in DK weight yarn, the designs in this collection are likely to feature a selection of standard and decorative crochet stitches, which may include:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – the foundational building block of crochet
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining and finishing
  • Double crochet (dc) – a short, dense stitch commonly used in garment construction
  • Half treble crochet (htr) – providing a slightly taller, softer fabric
  • Treble crochet (tr) – a taller stitch frequently used in shawls and decorative panels
  • Shell stitches or fan stitches – often used in shawl and cardigan edgings for decorative effect

Materials – Yarn and Hook

All designs are written specifically for Sirdar Snuggly DK yarn, a well-loved yarn from the Sirdar brand. Snuggly DK is renowned for its exceptionally soft handle, making it a popular choice for garments intended to be worn close to the skin. It is a DK (double knitting) weight yarn, which works up at a medium-light gauge and is suitable for a wide range of garment styles. A crochet hook appropriate for DK weight yarn would be used alongside this pattern; typically a hook in the region of 4mm is recommended for DK yarn, though the pattern itself will specify the exact hook size required to achieve the correct tension.

Although the the service I received was 1st class, I really liked the look of the baby cardigan but the found the pattern really confusing and difficult to follow, hence it has been put to one side until I can get a second opinion on how to proceed. Such a shame as I was really looking forward to making this little garment
