Product Description
Selja Triangular Shawl in Novita Nalle – Pattern Summary (NFFP009)
The Selja Triangular Shawl is a beautifully structured, large-format knitted shawl designed by Sari Nordlund for Novita. Published as a free downloadable PDF pattern (NFFP009), it is rated intermediate in difficulty and is worked in Novita Nalle yarn at DK weight. The finished shawl measures approximately 145 cm × 120 cm (57 in × 47 in), making it a generous, wrap-worthy accessory suitable for cooler seasons.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a single large triangular shawl worked from a corner cast-on, gradually increasing outward to create the classic triangular silhouette. The shawl features alternating bands of garter stitch and lace, separated by two-color striping, and is finished with playful handmade pom-poms at the corners. The result is a piece that balances rustic texture with delicate lace detailing.
Construction Method
The shawl is built using a bottom-up, corner-increase construction. Knitting begins with just 4 stitches cast on in Linen, and the piece grows through consistent kfb (knit front and back) increases on every right-side row. This creates the triangular shape organically as the work progresses. A slipped stitch edge is maintained throughout — stitches are slipped knitwise with yarn in front on wrong-side rows and knitted on right-side rows — giving the shawl a neat, polished selvedge along its straight edge.
The body of the shawl is structured in distinct sections:
- A garter stitch foundation worked in alternating two-row stripes of Gooseberry and Linen
- Two lace stripe sections inserted at intervals, each worked over 48 rows following a charted lace pattern with a 14-stitch repeat
- Further garter stitch striping between and after the lace sections, continuing the two-color alternation
Each lace section adds 24 stitches to the stitch count as the shawl widens. By the time the second lace stripe is complete, there are 256 stitches on the needles. The shawl is bound off loosely in garter stitch to preserve drape along the bound-off edge.
Techniques Used
- Garter stitch – all stitches knitted on every row, forming the primary fabric texture
- Two-color striping – alternating 2 rows of Gooseberry and 2 rows of Linen throughout the garter sections
- Lace knitting from a chart – two lace stripes are worked following a provided chart, with a 14-stitch repeat panel expanding as the shawl grows
- kfb increase (knit front and back) – used on every right-side row to build the triangular shape
- Slipped stitch selvedge – creates a tidy, consistent edge throughout the project
- Pom-pom making – handmade pom-poms approximately 5 cm in diameter are attached to the shawl's corners as a finishing detail
- Wet blocking – the finished shawl is pinned to measurements wrong side up, misted with water, and allowed to dry to open up the lace and set the shape
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch – the foundational stitch pattern throughout
- Lace pattern stitches – worked from a chart, including yarn-overs and decreases to form the lace motifs
- kfb (knit front and back) – the shaping increase used consistently on right-side rows
- Slipped
