I have always been fascinated by the past. The future? Not so much; it worries me more than intrigues me. But I love to look at old photos, read old books (especially if the books themselves are yellowed with age), and especially love old fashioned clothing, shawls in particular. What did these women think, as they crocheted so long ago? Were their lives so very different from mine? In many ways, probably so. But as I crochet, especially something in a style of the past, I can almost feel myself slipping into a different place and time, at one with those who crocheted before me. My sister swears that as she is knitting, she can feel our grandmother (who was a great knitter and crocheter) there with her, enjoying those same beloved stitches, rejoicing in the ability to create a small piece of heaven. Seems Like Old Times Crochet Shawl

What Is Being Made

Seems Like Old Times is a crochet shawl pattern designed by MADuNaier that draws inspiration from vintage shawl designs. This downloadable PDF pattern recreates the aesthetic of historical crochet shawlwork, specifically based on a classic two-colour crochet square shawl design from vintage needlework publications. The shawl celebrates traditional crochet techniques and the timeless appeal of old-fashioned garments, making it an ideal project for crafters who appreciate heritage crochet styles and historical needlework.

Techniques and Crochet Methods

This advanced-level crochet pattern employs traditional shawl construction techniques that connect modern crocheters to historical needlework practices. The design utilizes classic crochet methods for building structured shawl shapes, incorporating the methodical stitch work that characterized vintage crochet garments. The pattern demonstrates how traditional crochet techniques can be applied to create wearable pieces with authentic vintage charm. Crocheters working on this project will engage with time-honored construction methods that have been used in shawl-making for generations.

Stitches Used

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the available pattern information, this advanced crochet shawl incorporates the fundamental stitches essential to traditional square shawl construction. The pattern works with standard crochet stitches appropriate for creating structured shawl geometry and the two-colour colourwork techniques referenced in the original vintage design inspiration.

Materials: Yarn and Tools

Seems Like Old Times is designed to work with 4-ply and DK weight yarns, which are lightweight to medium-weight options ideal for creating drape and delicate fabric in shawl projects. These yarn weights allow for detailed stitch definition while maintaining the graceful flow characteristic of vintage shawl designs. Crocheters will need an appropriately sized crochet hook matched to their chosen yarn weight, as specified in the full pattern instructions included in the downloadable PDF.
