Product Description
A practical knit that uses up all your scrappy yarn bits.
While the bulk of this project is knitted in easy linen stitch, there are a few unusual design elements to add interest. It is a fun project to use up all your hand painted sock wool remnants.

I designed this project as part of the 2012 design swap on the South African swap group. I was delighted to be given Nikxi as my swap partner, she is so dear to me. I wanted to give her a case that would last through years of wear and tear and was textured.
I am delighted with this pattern and Nikxi thought it was wonderful. :)
Happy knitting! Carle
Scrappy Crochet Hook Case by Carle Dehning
What is Being Made
This is a practical knitted crochet hook case designed to organize and store crochet hooks while making excellent use of leftover yarn scraps. The case provides a functional storage solution for crafters, combining utility with creative yarn stash management. This original design by Carle Dehning transforms small quantities of yarn into a finished project that serves a real purpose in any fiber artist's toolkit.
Craft and Primary Technique
Despite its name referencing crochet hooks, this is a knitted project created using knitting needles and yarn. The design demonstrates advanced knitting skills and incorporates specialized techniques beyond basic knit and purl stitches, making it suitable for experienced knitters looking for a challenging and rewarding project.
Special Techniques and Stitches
The Scrappy Crochet Hook Case employs several advanced knitting techniques:
- Vikkel Braid - a decorative braided trim technique that adds visual interest and structural detail to the finished case
- Strategic turning techniques used in the construction of the bottom flap and top flap sections
- Precision casting off methods to create finished edges
- Twisted thread construction for reinforced details and decorative elements
- Sewing up techniques to assemble the various sections into a cohesive case
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and durability for a frequently-used accessory. The beauty of this design lies in its ability to utilize scrappy yarn bits—leftover lengths and colors from previous projects—making it an economical and sustainable choice for fiber artists. Standard knitting needles appropriate for 4-ply yarn are required to complete this project.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern from Nurturing Fibres, an original 2013 design by Carle Dehning. The pattern includes detailed instructions, abbreviations, pattern notes, finished measurements, and step-by-step guidance for all construction stages.
