Product Description

Scotts is a bottom up triangle shawl with unique slip stitches that create thirteen defined lines up the garter background. The sample was designed in a merino/yak/silk blend that has so much delicious drape. If you use a toothier wool yarn then your slip stitches will stand out more and have a stiffer triangle.

The name Scotts was inspired by my trip to Scotland (where I purchased this yarn) and the Scotts monument in Edinburgh. I hope you love the striking simplicity of this shawl as much as I do.

Scotts Shawl by All Knit Up Designs

What is Being Made

The Scotts Shawl is a large triangular knit shawl measuring 76 inches wide by 33 inches deep (193 cm wide by 84 cm deep). This design creates a generous wrap suitable for layering or wearing as a statement accessory. The shawl is worked from the top down using a center-increase construction method, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking to create a substantial yet elegant garment.

Knitting Techniques Used

This shawl employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level knitters. The primary construction method involves increases worked on the right side, with two stitches increased for every two rows to create the triangular shape. The shawl uses garter stitch as its main fabric, which is created by knitting every row on both the right and wrong sides. This simple yet effective stitch creates a textured, reversible fabric with visible horizontal ridges.

The pattern incorporates knit front and back (KFB) increases to shape the shawl, along with stitch markers placed strategically to help track pattern repeats and increase points. The design is worked on circular needles despite being a flat project, which allows the knitter to accommodate the growing number of stitches as the shawl expands.

Stitches and Stitch Details

  • Garter Stitch: The foundation fabric, created by knitting every row
  • Knit Front and Back (KFB): An increase stitch that creates two stitches from one, used to shape the shawl's expansion
  • Slip Purlwise with Yarn in Front (Sl PWYIF): Used for edge stitches and pattern transitions
  • Stitch Markers: Essential notions used to track increase points and pattern sections throughout the project

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Scotts Shawl requires 800 yards (732 meters) of fingering weight yarn. The pattern specifies Ginger's Hand Dyed, Yakety Yak 4ply yarn, which is a luxury blend containing 60% Merino, 20% Yak, and 20% Silk. This fiber combination provides softness, breathability, and a subtle sheen characteristic of hand-dyed artisan yarns. The yarn is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 26 garter bumps over 4 inches (10 cm) in blocked garter stitch.

The project requires US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80 cm) or longer to accommodate the expanding stitch count. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and 30 or more stitch markers to track the shawl's construction points.

Difficulty Level

This shawl is rated as a beginner-level project, making it accessible to knitters new to shawl construction. The straightforward garter stitch fabric and simple increase techniques require only basic knitting skills, while the generous finished dimensions create an impressive final garment that belies the pattern's simplicity.
