Scottish Flag Socks by Rita Taylor
What is Being Made
These are advanced-level knitted socks designed to fit foot lengths of 10, 10½, or 11 inches (25½, 26½, or 28 centimeters), with an adjustable leg length. The pattern creates a pair of socks using a charted colorwork design inspired by the Scottish flag. The instructions specify making two socks using identical pattern repeats.
Knitting Techniques Used
This project employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques. The socks are constructed using circular knitting on double-pointed needles, which allows for seamless construction in the round. The pattern incorporates colorwork from a chart, requiring the knitter to follow a visual pattern guide while working. The design features stitch pattern repeats that progress over 10 rounds, with instructions to repeat the sequence multiple times to achieve the desired leg length. Knitters have the flexibility to extend the leg by repeating the 10-round pattern additional times beyond the standard three repeats.
Stitches Used
The Scottish Flag Socks utilize fundamental knitting stitches combined in a structured pattern. The primary stitches include knit stitches (k) and purl stitches (p), which are worked in specific sequences to create the colorwork design. The pattern begins with a ribbed cuff worked as knit 1 round, purl 2 rounds, which provides elasticity and helps the sock stay in place on the leg. The main pattern section alternates between knit and purl stitches in repeating motifs across 10 rounds, creating a textured surface that complements the color changes of the Scottish flag design.
Materials and Tools
The project requires Frangipani 5ply Guernsey yarn in the shade Aran, which is 100% wool. One 100-gram ball provides 240 yards (220 meters) of yarn, sufficient for all three sizes; however, an additional ball is recommended if you wish to make the socks longer than the standard leg length. The needles required are two sets of double-pointed needles (DPNs): a set of four 2.75mm needles (US 2, UK 12) for the cuff ribbing, and a set of four 3mm needles (US 2, UK 11) for the main sock body. The project achieves a tension of 26 stitches and 32 rows over 10 centimeters when worked on the larger needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished sock dimensions.
