Knitted Lace Scarf in Schachenmayr Tahiti – Free Downloadable PDF Pattern (Design 2182)

This free downloadable knitting pattern from Schachenmayr guides you through creating a beautifully lightweight, elongated scarf with an open, airy texture. Finished dimensions are approximately 7 inches wide by 59 inches long (18 cm x 150 cm), making it an elegant accessory that drapes gracefully and works across seasons. The pattern is suitable for knitters who are comfortable reading a chart and working with fine lace-weight yarn.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a knitted scarf worked in a single repeating lace-style main pattern from cast-on to bind-off. Its slender width and generous length make it ideal for wrapping loosely around the neck or wearing as a decorative accent. The elongated stitch construction gives the fabric a distinctive, slightly sheer quality that is characteristic of cotton lace knitting.

Materials Used

  • Yarn: Schachenmayr Tahiti in colorway Sahara (07622) – approximately 100 g / 2 balls, each approximately 280 m (308 yd) per 50 g ball. The yarn is composed of 99% cotton and 1% polyester, placing it firmly in the lace weight category. The high cotton content gives the finished scarf a soft, breathable drape with a subtle natural sheen.
  • Needles: Milward knitting needles in size 2–2½ (2.75 mm) are recommended to achieve the correct gauge and to allow the elongated stitches to open up properly.

Techniques Used

  • Chart reading: The main pattern is presented as a knitting chart. Only right-side (RS) rows are charted; wrong-side (WS) rows follow a simple rule of knitting all stitches, with special actions on rows 6 and 12.
  • Elongated stitches (drop stitch technique): On RS rows, yarn-overs (extra wraps) are worked into certain stitches. On the corresponding WS rows 6 and 12, these extra wraps are deliberately dropped and the stitch is pulled up to elongate it. This creates the open, ladder-like texture that defines the scarf's visual appeal.
  • Yarn-over (Umschlag): Used within the chart pattern to create the extra wraps that are later dropped, contributing to the lace effect.
  • Cast-on and bind-off: 49 stitches are cast on to begin. The bind-off is worked after completing chart row 10, with all stitches bound off knitwise for a clean, even edge.
  • Pattern repeat management: The 12-stitch pattern repeat is worked 3 times across the row, with additional stitches worked before and after the repeat as indicated by the chart to balance the edges.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (RS and WS): All wrong-side rows are worked entirely in knit, giving the fabric a garter-like base between the textured RS pattern rows.
  • Yarn-overs: Multiple wraps are added on specific RS rows as directed by the chart, then released on WS rows 6 and 12 to form the elongated, open stitch effect.
  • Elongated / drop stitches: The defining stitch of this pattern — created by dropping the extra wraps and stretching the stitch — produces the scarf's signature open, lace-like columns.

Gauge and Sizing

The recommended gauge is 26–27 stitches and 38 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) in the main pattern. Achieving this gauge is important for matching the stated finished dimensions of 18 cm x 150 cm (7" x 59"). Because lace-weight cotton has little stretch or elasticity compared to wool, swatching with the correct needle size is especially worthwhile before beginning the full scarf.
