Interesting pattern. Unusual border instead of the usual rib hem. A good pattern to follow but the hem needs to be followed closely to avoid mistakes.

The Scallopwing Cardigan is a beautifully detailed, long-sleeved cardigan pattern designed by Julie Turjoman and published by Valley Yarns as pattern #1079. Worked in the luxurious Valley Yarns Hampden yarn, this intermediate-level knitting project combines elegant texture, thoughtful construction, and a playful two-color accent to create a garment that is equally at home on a spring weekend outing or a casual everyday occasion.
This pattern produces a long-sleeved, set-in-sleeve cardigan with a crew neckline, integrated front bands, and inset welt pockets. The cardigan is available in eight sizes — XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, and 4XL — with finished bust measurements ranging from 34 inches to 62½ inches. The design is intended to be worn with 2 to 4 inches of positive ease, though knitters who prefer a closer fit are advised to work one size smaller. Finished lengths range from approximately 24¼ inches to 27¾ inches depending on size. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in Size S.
What truly sets the Scallopwing Cardigan apart is its Double Trellis stitch border, which runs from the hem up through the hip area, adding rich visual texture to the lower portion of the garment. This decorative hem treatment replaces a plain ribbed or stockinette hem with something far more striking and intricate. Above this textured border, inset welt pockets are seamlessly integrated, positioned so they sit neatly at the transition point between the decorative hem and the body of the cardigan.
A particularly charming design element is the use of a contrast color (CC) to line the pockets and to work all cast-on and neck bind-off edges. This means that every time the cardigan is worn open and the pocket openings are visible, a subtle pop of contrasting color is revealed. The main color (MC) is #12 Cloudy Sky — a soft, sky-toned shade — while the contrast color is #10 Lizard, a complementary earthy-green tone. These two colors from the Valley Yarns Hampden palette work together to give the cardigan a polished, intentional finish.
The ribbed front bands are integrated directly into the body stitch count rather than being picked up and worked separately after the fact, which contributes to a cleaner, more cohesive finished appearance. The neckband, however, is worked during finishing by picking up stitches around the completed neck opening.
The Scallopwing Cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up, worked-flat method. The body is knitted back and forth in rows, beginning at the hem and worked in one piece up to the armholes. This single-piece lower body construction reduces the number of seams in the finished garment and helps maintain consistent tension across the fronts and back. After dividing for the armholes, the Left Front, Right Front, and Back are completed separately, and the garment is then seamed during finishing.
