Product Description
The colorwork in this pattern is inspired by one of my favorite Moana characters - the sassy ocean! This bag is made using tapestry crochet and a double strand of yarn, so it is extra sturdy. It is plenty roomy for a day at the beach - I easily carried a large book, water bottle, towel, keys, and wallet with space to spare. Because it's made with a double strand of yarn, it works up really fast!

Sassy Ocean Beach Bag by Allison Bostrom
What is Being Made
The Sassy Ocean Beach Bag is a structured crochet tote designed for beach outings and everyday use. This intermediate-level project creates a spacious bag with practical dimensions of 12 inches in height, 15 inches in length, and 4.5 inches in width, making it ideal for carrying beach essentials, towels, and personal items.
Crochet Techniques and Methods
This pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques to construct a durable and visually appealing beach bag. The design utilizes two strands of yarn held together, which creates a thicker fabric with increased structure and stability—essential qualities for a functional tote bag that needs to support weight.
The pattern incorporates single crochet stitches as the primary construction method, known for creating tight, dense fabric that resists stretching and provides durability. The pattern also includes back loop only (BLO) crochet, a technique that creates textured ridges by working through only the back loop of stitches, adding visual interest and dimension to the finished piece.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and turning chains
- Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for constructing the bag body
- Single crochet two together (sc2tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and finishing edges
- Standing single crochet – an alternative method for beginning new rows or rounds without a turning chain
- Back loop only (BLO) single crochet – creates textured ridges and visual definition
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Sassy Ocean Beach Bag is designed to be worked with worsted or aran weight yarn, offering flexibility in yarn selection. The sample featured in the pattern uses Premier Home Cotton, a natural fiber choice ideal for beach bags due to cotton's breathability, durability, and moisture-wicking properties.
Yarn requirements are substantial for this project: 520 grams (910 yards) of main color (MC) and 120 grams (210 yards) of contrasting color (CC). The sample bag was created using Cream as the main color and Turquoise as the contrasting color, creating a classic beach-inspired colorway.
The pattern calls for an I/5.5 mm crochet hook, though the designer notes that hook size may be adjusted as needed to obtain proper gauge. The recommended gauge is 13 single crochet stitches by 13 rows equals a 4-inch square when working with two strands of yarn held together.
Additional Materials and Tools
Beyond yarn and hook, crafters will need standard crochet notions including a tape measure for checking dimensions and gauge, scissors for cutting yarn, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and any finishing details.
