Product Description

This is a long scarf designed during the Colourmart scrap set challenge that was held during the Ravellenic games. I wanted a design that would show of the wonderful colours in the scrap set and be feminine and pretty.

It uses 5 different colours but could easily be made with 3 colours or even a single colour throughout. It is long enough to wrap around the neck twice and still leave the ends hanging free, or just drape it around your neck as a decorative item.

The scarf can be easily modified to make it shorter for a child or for yourself if you don't want it quite so long. There are instructions included in the pattern for doing this.

It uses 8/28NM dk weight cashmere cotton from Colourmart approximately 70mts/80yds each of 4 colours and 100mts/120yds of 1 colour, or 400mts/440yds in total.

It has been tested by the wonderful testers in the [Happy Hookers Hangout.][2]

I am always available via PM or email for comments and questions.

Sariah Scarf by Sarahjanedesigns

What is Being Made

The Sariah Scarf is a long, decorative crochet scarf measuring 216 centimeters (85 inches) in length and 15 centimeters (6 inches) in width. This design features pretty flowers hanging from the ends, making it suitable both as a purely decorative accessory and as a functional layer for added warmth around the neck. The scarf is part of a series of four coordinated scarves designed by Sarah Jane Designs.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental crochet construction methods to create an elegant finished piece. The pattern utilizes chain spaces and stitch repetition to build the scarf structure, with particular attention to maintaining consistent stitch placement across rows. The decorative floral elements at the scarf ends add visual interest and demonstrate intermediate-level shaping and embellishment techniques.

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The Sariah Scarf uses the following crochet stitches (in UK/Australian terminology):

  • Treble (tr) - The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the scarf
  • Chain (ch) - Used for foundation and creating chain spaces
  • Double crochet (dc) - Referenced in the pattern abbreviations

The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 stitches and 10 rows using a 4mm hook with dk weight yarn and treble stitches. However, the designer notes that tension and gauge are not critical for this project if slight variations in finished size are acceptable.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Sariah Scarf requires dk weight cashmere cotton yarn from Colourmart, with a total yardage of approximately 400 meters (440 yards). The yarn is distributed across five colors: approximately 70 meters (80 yards) each of four colors, and 100 meters (120 yards) of one color. This multi-color construction creates visual depth and interest throughout the scarf design.

Additional materials include a 4mm crochet hook (or the size needed to achieve correct tension for your preferred drape) and a yarn needle for finishing and weaving in ends.

Format and Designer Information

This is a downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Sarah Jane Designs, originally published in April 2012. The pattern is provided in UK and Australian crochet terminology.
