Crochet Techniques Used

The Sarah Toque employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The construction involves working in rows initially before transitioning to joining rounds for the crown shaping.

  • Chain (ch): Foundation and turning chains
  • Slip stitch (slst): For joining rounds
  • Back loop only (BLO): Worked throughout for consistent texture

Materials Required

Yarn: Bulky weight yarn, classified as #5. The sample was created using Lion Brand Wool-Ease Tonal, a durable and easy-care option suitable for hats.

Hook: Size J (6mm) crochet hook

Gauge and Pattern Notes

The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 stitches and 11 rows in back loop only single crochet equals 4 inches when worked with a J hook. Achieving proper gauge is important for ensuring the finished hat fits the intended head circumference. The pattern includes special construction notes regarding how to join the foundation chain with completed rows and transition between working flat and in rounds.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an easy, beginner-friendly pattern, the Sarah Toque is an excellent introduction to hat construction. The straightforward stitch combinations and clear sizing options make this design accessible to crocheters new to the craft.
