Sandur Raglan Pullover by HelstrupDesign

What is Being Made

Sandur is a classic raglan pullover sweater featuring a decorative lace pattern on the sleeves. This downloadable knitting pattern is offered in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3XL, with finished chest widths from 95 to 142 centimeters and lengths from 60 to 65 centimeters. The raglan construction—where sleeve stitches are increased diagonally from the neckline to the armholes—creates a comfortable, contemporary fit suitable for various body types and layering preferences.

Knitting Techniques Used

Sandur employs intermediate-level knitting techniques appropriate for knitters with foundational skills seeking to expand their repertoire. The pattern utilizes raglan shaping, a classic construction method that distributes increases evenly across the front, back, and sleeves for balanced proportions and ease of movement. Lace patterning on the sleeves introduces openwork elements that require attention to yarn-overs and decreases. The sweater is worked primarily in the round using circular needles, a technique that minimizes seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish. Knitters will need to manage stitch markers to track pattern repeats and raglan increases, and employ a stitch holder to temporarily secure stitches during construction.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The body of Sandur is worked in stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit fabric that provides a smooth, classic appearance. Stockinette stitch is created by alternating knit stitches on right-side rows with purl stitches on wrong-side rows when working flat, or by knitting every round when working in the round. The sleeves feature a lace pattern that incorporates yarn-overs and strategic decreases to create decorative openwork. According to the pattern specifications, the lace pattern is worked over 21 stitches, allowing for an intricate design that adds visual interest while maintaining structural integrity.

Yarn and Materials

Sandur is designed for aran-weight yarn, a medium-heavy yarn category that knits at approximately 80 meters per 50 grams. This weight provides excellent drape and structure suitable for a pullover sweater. The pattern recommends natural fiber options including wool, silk, or cotton, offering flexibility based on desired warmth, breathability, and care requirements. Specific yarn suggestions include Lamana Ica, Stylecraft Craft Cotton, Lana Grossa Bingo, King Cole Big Value Recycled Cotton Aran, and CottonSilk from Hjertegarn (used for the size L sample pictured). Total yarn requirements range from 700 grams for the smallest size to 1050 grams for the largest size.

Needles and Notions

Knitters will require two 4 mm circular needles—one measuring 60 or 80 centimeters for working the body in the round, and one measuring 40 centimeters for working the neckband and upper sections. Alternatively, 4 mm double-pointed needles may substitute for the smaller circular needle. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and raglan increases, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and a stitch holder for securing stitches during construction. Proper needle selection is essential; the pattern emphasizes using a needle size that achieves the specified gauge, as individual knitter tension varies.

Gauge and Sizing

Achieving correct gauge is critical for this project. The pattern specifies 18 stitches and 22 rows in stockinette stitch over a 10 by 10 centimeter swatch, while the lace pattern is worked over 21 stitches. Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their needle size and tension produce the correct measurements, as variations in gauge will significantly impact finished dimensions and fit.
