What Is Being Made
Sandra's Wrap is a crocheted shawl designed by Julie Blagojevich. This intermediate-level project creates a curved, wearable wrap that measures 67 inches along the inside curve and 11 inches in width before blocking. After blocking, the dimensions expand to 72.5 inches along the inside curve and 15 inches in width, demonstrating the significant shaping that occurs during the finishing process.
Crochet Techniques
The wrap employs several key crochet techniques to achieve its structure and drape. Short rows are used to create shaping and the curved silhouette characteristic of wrap-style shawls. The pattern works from the top edge downward and incorporates color changes throughout the design, with specific instructions to transition colors by completing the final yarn over and pull through of each stitch using the new color. Blocking is an essential finishing technique, as the wrap expands significantly in both dimensions during this process, transforming the fabric from its pre-blocked state to its final, more open and draped appearance.
Crochet Stitches Used
Sandra's Wrap utilizes a variety of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to build its fabric:
- Single crochet (sc) — provides structure and density in certain sections
- Half double crochet (hdc) — creates a medium-weight fabric
- Double crochet (dc) — used throughout the pattern to form the primary stitch groups
- Treble crochet (tr) — adds height and openness to the fabric
- Double treble (dtr) — creates taller stitches for increased drape
- Chain stitches (ch) — form spaces between stitch groups, contributing to the wrap's open, lacy quality
- Slip stitch (sl st) — used for joining and finishing
The pattern works with groups of stitches, specifically combinations such as (single crochet, chain 1, double crochet), which create a rhythmic, textured fabric. The gauge is measured at 3 groups of (sc, ch 1, dc) and 5 rows equaling 2 square inches, measured in the less-dense section rather than the short-row area.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The wrap is worked in Shibui Linen, a 100% linen yarn. The project requires four colors: Sidewalk (Color A, 2 hanks), Camel (Color B, 1 hank), Scale (Color C, 1 hank), and Field (Color D, 1 hank). Each hank contains 246 yards and weighs 50 grams, providing a total of approximately 1,230 yards of 4-ply linen yarn. Linen is a natural fiber known for its breathability, durability, and beautiful drape, making it an excellent choice for a shawl project.
Tools: The pattern calls for a size J (6.00mm) crochet hook. A darning needle is required for weaving in ends after completion.
