Product Description
The ruffled cable knit scarf has cables and a textured panel running along its length. The finished scarf is 60 inches long and the width is 10.5 inches, so it is cosy and warm!
The pattern requires 600 yards (or 549 metres) of yarn and only one type of yarn is needed. The scarf shown in the pictures was knitted using Woolcraft yarn, however King Cole big value dk would make a great substitute.
Ruffles and Textured Cable Knit Scarf by Catherine Keaney
What is Being Made
This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a decorative scarf that combines textured cable elements with ruffled details. The design creates visual interest through the interplay of raised cable motifs and gathered ruffle sections, making it a sophisticated accessory suitable for various styling occasions.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft method. The scarf is constructed flat on needles, working in rows from a cast-on edge to the finished length. The pattern incorporates multiple advanced knitting techniques to achieve its textured appearance and dimensional effects.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
- Stockinette Stitch — forms the smooth base fabric and serves as the gauge reference at 16 stitches and 21 rows per 4 inches
- Cable Stitches — created by placing stitches on a cable needle, holding them to the front, and knitting across to form twisted, raised rope-like textures throughout the design
- Reverse Stockinette (Purl) — used to create contrasting texture and define pattern sections
- Garter Stitch Accents — alternating knit and purl stitches create a ribbed, textured appearance in specific pattern areas
- Short Rows — incorporated to create the ruffle effect, using yarn forward and slip stitches to shape gathered sections
- Yarn Forward (YF) — increases that help create openness and movement in the ruffle portions
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is worked in DK weight yarn, which provides a balanced fabric weight suitable for a versatile scarf. The project uses a 5.5mm knitting needle and begins with a cable cast-on method, creating a structured, professional edge. The scarf is cast on with 54 stitches, providing adequate width for a practical accessory.
Pattern Structure and Design Details
The stitch pattern repeats across the width of the scarf, with cable crosses occurring at regular intervals to build the textured cable pattern. The pattern incorporates both right-side and wrong-side rows, with specific instructions for manipulating stitches to create dimensional effects. Short-row shaping is employed strategically to introduce gathered ruffle sections that add movement and visual complexity to the finished piece.
