What is Being Made

The Roving Summer Wrap is an advanced-level knitted coat designed by independent designer Irene Lin. This seamless garment is worked from the top-down, beginning at the back neck and progressing downward in one continuous piece. The wrap is available in four sizes: XS, S, M, and L, with the sample photographed in size M. The finished garment features a sophisticated drape suitable for warm-weather layering, with a length that extends approximately 122 to 164 centimeters (48 to 64.5 inches) depending on size.

Construction Techniques

This wrap employs a top-down seamless construction method, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a cohesive garment worked in the round. The knitter begins at the back neck and works downward, using strategic increases to shape the body. A specialized waist strap is incorporated into the design, requiring a needle size change during construction. The pattern utilizes stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the project. Waste yarn is employed as a provisional cast-on or stitch holder technique, allowing for flexible construction and finishing options.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric surface. The pattern incorporates several specialized techniques including:

• Knit 2 Together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
• Make One Right (M1R) – a right-slanted increase for seamless shaping

Yarn and Materials

The Roving Summer Wrap is designed to be worked in Cloudborn Pima Cotton DK yarn in the colorway Jungle Green. This natural fiber choice is ideal for a summer wrap, offering breathability and a refined drape. The pattern requires approximately 7 skeins for sizes XS and S, 8 skeins for size M, and 9 skeins for size L. Each skein contains 231 yards (212 meters) and weighs 100 grams.

Needles and Tools

Construction requires two different needle sizes to accommodate the varying stitch densities in different sections:

• 4mm / US 6 needles – used for the main garment body
• 6mm / US 10 needles – used for the waist strap, allowing for a more relaxed gauge in this section

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 23 stitches and 29 rows over a 10 by 10 centimeter (4 by 4 inch) swatch in stockinette stitch after blocking. Accurate gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished measurements. The wrap features a consistent back neck width of 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) across all sizes, with body width ranging from 82 centimeters (32.25 inches) in XS to 100 centimeters (39.4 inches) in L.
