Product Description
What a lovely addition to the three Fancy Washcloth patterns that I have designed. A Cluster basket with a precious drop over lace edge, and you can add lace or ribbon. This helps to complete the "Touch of Downton Spa Set" Do you want to pamper yourself, or give someone special a nice gift? Make this basket, and add some soaps and crochet up a washcloth or two, and it makes the perfect gift!
There is also another basket that goes with this collection, it is a square basket, and was a hit with my pattern testers. You will hold two strands of yarn, until you reach the drop over lace edge.
This pattern uses any cotton yarn, I used Lilly’s Sugar and Cream, approx. 100 to 150 yards

Round Cluster Basket with Drop Over Lace Edge
What is Being Made
This project creates a functional round basket featuring a decorative drop-over lace edge. The basket is designed as a container suitable for storage or display purposes. The combination of a solid cluster-based body with an elegant lace edging makes this piece both practical and visually appealing for home organization or craft storage.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a crochet project designed by Krissy's OTM Crochet. The pattern uses crochet techniques to construct a three-dimensional basket form with a decorative lace trim. The project is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond basic stitches.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs a variety of fundamental and decorative crochet stitches:
- Cluster stitch — a custom stitch created by inserting the hook into a stitch, drawing up loops, and pulling through multiple loops at once to create textured, dimensional elements that form the main body of the basket
- Chain (CH) — used for foundation and spacing
- Single Crochet (SC) — provides structure and stability
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) — creates medium-height stitches for body construction
- Double Crochet (DC) — adds height and drape to sections
- High Back Post Half Double Crochet (H BP HDC) — creates textured post stitches that add dimension
- Slip Stitch (SLP ST) — used for joining rounds and finishing edges
Materials Required
The pattern calls for Lilly Sugar 'n Cream 100% Cotton yarn held in double strands (two strands worked together). Approximately 300–250 yards of yarn is needed to complete the project. Cotton yarn is ideal for baskets as it provides structure, durability, and a natural aesthetic suitable for storage containers.
Hooks and Tools
The pattern uses three different crochet hook sizes to achieve varying stitch heights and textures:
- L-11/8mm — largest hook for looser, more open stitches
- K-10.5/6.5mm — medium hook for balanced stitch definition
- G-6/4.0mm — smallest hook for tighter, more defined stitches and detail work
Pattern Structure and Techniques
The pattern uses standard crochet abbreviations and notation conventions. Key techniques include working in the back loop only (BLO) for textured effects, working into spaces (SP) created between stitches, and using post stitches for dimensional texture. The pattern employs a main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC) system, allowing for creative color combinations. Repeat sequences are clearly marked with asterisks (*) and multiplication notation (x) to indicate how many times sections should be worked.
Yarn Weight and Construction
The project uses aran and worsted weight yarn classifications. Working with two strands of cotton yarn creates a fabric with excellent structure and weight retention, essential for a basket that must hold its shape while containing items. The yarn weight combined with the cluster stitch technique produces a sturdy, textured fabric ideal for functional storage pieces.
